Social work senior Gwen Leonares joined the UT Austin Arabic Flagship Program because she knew she wanted to work with refugee populations. During her internship at Refugee Services of Central Texas, she had plenty of opportunities to practice Arabic with individuals and families from Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Syria.
Speaking the language of your clients, Leonares says, “is a key part of being a culturally competent social worker.”
