TxPEP has published two new journal articles. “Impact of Contraceptive Counseling on Texans Who Can and Cannot Receive No-Cost Post-Abortion Contraception,” published in Contraception, evaluates participants’ desire for contraceptive counseling during abortion visits, the impact of counseling on change in contraceptive preference, satisfaction with counseling, and 1-year postabortion contraceptive continuation. The study finds that in Texas, where access to affordable postabortion contraception is limited, high quality contraceptive counseling is associated with 1-year contraceptive continuation among people eligible for no-cost methods.
“Improving Assessment of Demand for Postpartum Tubal Ligation among Publicly Insured Women in Texas,” also published in Contraception, is based on interviews with 1700 women in Texas to examine the need for tubal ligation. The study finds that prompting the people interviewed can uncover unmet demand for the procedure. Women unable to obtain a desired procedure had a substantial chance of pregnancy within 18 months after delivery.
