Jonathan Bard is Professor of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (OR&IE) in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin and holds the Industrial Properties Corporation Endowed Faculty Fellowship. In addition, he serves as Associate Director for the Center for the Management of Operations Logistics and Assistant Graduate Advisor for the OR&IE and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Programs. For 10 years, he was the Coordinator for the OR&IE Program.
Dr. Bard received a D.Sc. in Operations Research from the George Washington University, an M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Since joining The University of Texas, he has taught courses in mathematical modeling, production planning and control, optimization theory, and project management. His research interests center on (1) development of efficient algorithms for problems related to airline operations, vehicle routing, and machine scheduling; (2) design and analysis of manufacturing systems; (3) use of decomposition techniques to solve large-scale hierarchical planning problems; and (4) multicriteria decision-making applied to socioeconomic systems.
Dr. Bard is an internationally recognized expert on bilevel programming, personnel scheduling, and discrete manufacturing and has given numerous workshops and short courses on these topics. He is an active consultant to a number of governmental agencies and national corporations. He is the founding editor of IIE Transactions on Operations Engineering and currently serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Production Research, Computers & Operations Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Journal of the Operational Research Society and Computers & Industrial Engineering. He is a fellow of INFORMS and IIE, and a senior member of IEEE, and has held several offices in each of these organizations.
Dr. Bard’s research has been published in the leading operations research, industrial engineering, and management science journals and has received widespread recognition, including: (1) the David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award given by IIE to recognize a lifetime of achievement; (2) IIE Transactions Award for Best Application Paper; (3) Operations Research Division of IIE Outstanding Contribution Award; (4) Joint Publishers Book-of-the-Year Award; and (5) Distinguished Scholar Award given by the Japanese Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
Before coming to the University of Texas, Dr. Bard taught at the University of California – Berkeley, Northeastern University, and The University of Massachusetts. He also worked as a program manager for the Aerospace Corporation and as a systems engineer for Booz, Allen & Hamilton. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
