CGC and the Chemistry Student Safety Organization (CSSO) jointly invited faculty, staff, postdocs, and students in our Department to a Cookie Decorating Coffee Hour to wish them a merry and safe holiday break on Friday, December 13th, 2019. Please enjoy some event photos below and follow CSSO on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
Not only did we make it snow with sodium polyacrylate, CGC splashed some color into the community for this year’s Jinglebooze at Thinkery on December 5th, 2019. Amanda Helms, Kelly Liang, and Calla McCulley taught participants that Sharpies aren’t as permanent as advertised. Participants sprayed their colored coffee filters with rubbing alcohol to tie-dye their work of art and create some festive art! Please see some beautiful examples below for an easy holiday experiment 🙂
Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar Participation
During Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar, Thinkery sends pairs of scientists out to different bars and restaurants, where the public is invited to ask them questions in an informal, relaxed setting. One of our CGC officers, Calla McCulley, was invited to participate with this program on November 7th, 2019. She was joined by Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Kanan Patel at Lala’s Little Nugget that night, and the two scientists answered science questions from members of the local Austin community for over two hours. Events like these help show members of the public that scientists are humans too and that science can be pretty powerful when trying to understand complex problems in our society.
