Welcome to the Beltway
A Week in Washington, D.C.
May 24 – 28, 2010

Welcome to the Beltway is a five-day seminar and visit to the nation’s capital hosted by the Archer Center and the DC Texas Exes for undergraduates, graduate students and alumni of the University of Texas System to learn about potential career opportunities in fields such as government, politics, business, law, communication and non-profits.

Program includes:

*   Career Panel Discussions
*   Networking Receptions/Events
*   Young Professionals Luncheon
*   Sightseeing Tours

Program Fee is $395/person and includes 4 nights of lodging, career panels, sightseeing tours, evening receptions, several meals, and lunch with young professionals living in D.C.  Spaces are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so get your application in early.

The Lora Romero Memorial Award for Interdisciplinary Research in Race, Ethnicity and Gender
This is an annual award created in memory of former UT colleague, Lora Romero. One or two awards will be presented each spring, alternating between graduate and undergraduate student recipients. The award will honor and support students working in the area of gender studies and Chicano/a studies or the intersection between race, ethnicity and gender. Journalism and PR Internships in DC this Summer

How will you spend your time this summer?

Did you know that you still have time to secure a journalism or public relations internship this summer in Washington, D.C?

The Institute on Political Journalism (IPJ) offers you an opportunity to experience the exciting worlds of journalism and public relations in our nation’s capital.

This summer’s IPJ application deadline has been extended to March 25, 2010 with scholarship funding available. You still have the opportunity to be placed in an internship that can launch your career and give you a competitive edge after graduation.

Here’s what you could be doing this summer at your internship:

  • Attend press conferences and briefings on Capitol Hill
  • Put the finishing touches on a strategic ad campaign for a client lobbying Congress.
  • Work with a team of investigative reporters on breaking news stories from the Pentagon
  • Write a press release and make pitch calls to local media outlets for and advocacy organization.
  • Research and write a report on an important policy issue related to the health care debates
  • Edit video and audio sound bites for television or radio news outlets
  • Conduct “man on the street” interviews on the national mall for the evening news
  • Learn the steps to take in crisis management for a client

About the Program
Sponsored by The Fund for American Studies in partnership with Georgetown University, IPJ is an eight-week academic internship program held in Washington, D.C. for undergraduate students interested in journalism and both corporate and advocacy public relations. The Institute combines substantive professional experience for 35 hours a week with a challenging academic experience worth 6 credit hours from Georgetown University. All students are housed on campus in apartment-style dorms.

Honors Colloquium Student Mentor Application Due March 30

The University Honors Center staff invites you to apply for a position as an Honors Colloquium student mentor for the 29th annual Honors Colloquium, held July 22-24, 2010.

The Honors Colloquium is a three-day recruiting event, which takes place on The University of Texas at Austin campus and is designed to introduce rising high school seniors to life at the university while encouraging them to apply to UT and its honors programs.

Student mentors are a critical component to our program. They interact with participants and provide support for Colloquium activities. Most importantly, they have fun!
