Exciting Essay Contest

Apply for UT’s annual Free Speech Essay Contest! The contest is open exclusively to UT undergraduates, and all undergraduates are eligible.

Prizes for the top three essays range from $700-$1500.

Deadline for submission is March 12, 2021.

The topics that students may choose between this year concern:

  • The rights of listeners
  • The difference between government restrictions on speech and private restrictions on speech

LAH 102H Writing Fellow Applications

Please put in writing: “What you think a good Writing Fellow does and what a student needs from a good tutor.” Please submit your application in by Monday, March 22 as an attachment in an email to this address: Writing.dsbaji45xvy3gg6w@u.box.com

Writing Fellow are expected to attend LAH 102H every Monday from 4 – 4:50pm and attend the Writing Fellow meeting immediately after class until 5:15 pm.

Study Abroad Scholarships

The Liberal Arts Honors Program will award scholarships in varying amounts to support LAH students and Humanities majors who will be studying abroad in the Spring, Summer, and/or Fall.  An LAH student may apply for this scholarship by writing a one-page statement of his or her study abroad plans. The statement should include where and what the student will be studying, the projected cost involved, and the role that study abroad and the mastery of a foreign language plays in the student’s academic and career goals.

Please submit your application online through the study abroad online scholarship application, Global Assist and select “Get Started”. The website will prompt you to set up an online profile and show you a list of scholarships which criteria you meet. If you are applying for a study abroad program not affiliated with UT, please enter program code 300999.

Both LAH students and Humanities majors are eligible to apply for the LAH Study Abroad scholarship. Please contact the LAH office with any questions.

Spring 2021 Gale Lecture

On Sunday 2/28 from 5-7 pm, Dr. Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett will explore “1,000 Jewish Cookbooks: Gems from a Personal Collection.”  

Dr. Kirshenblatt-Gimblett is the Ronald S. Lauder Chief Curator, POLIN Museum Core Exhibition and University Professor Emerita and Professor Emerita of Performance Studies at New York University.  Dr. Kirshenblatt-Gimblett’s writing, teaching, and curatorial work spans many disciplines and covers a wide range of topics.

Pre-registration is necessary at all UT events and the talk will take place via Zoom. Registration is quick and easy through our website here.

Headliners Foundation Scholarship

A friendly reminder that the Headliners Foundation is now accepting scholarship applications for the 2021-22 school year. Deadline to apply is March 19.

In addition to the 15 annual Foundation scholarships, the $3,000 Bess Whitehead Scott Scribes Scholarship will be awarded to a non-traditional student who is seeking education in fields related to journalism and writing. When reviewing the BWS Scholarship applications, the Headliners Foundation’s Academic Excellence Committee will give strong preference to applicants with 10-15 years of professional work experience in journalism, nonfiction writing or a related field. Click here to learn more.

The Foundation awarded more than $72,000 in scholarships for the 2020-21 school year, with individual awards ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 annually.

Bridging Disciplines Programs

The spring BDP application deadline will be on Thursday, March 11th at 8:00am. 

Students can learn more about the BDPs by viewing a pre-recorded or live online BDP information session this spring. The first live Zoom info session is coming up on Friday, February 19. If students are ready to apply, they can find the BDP application on the BDP website. For students who are not quite ready to apply this spring, please know that we’ll have another application deadline in Fall 2021, in early October.

These information sessions will be general in nature and intended for anyone with questions about the program, online application, costs, internships, classes, etc. The UTLA Program is open to all UT majors  with at least 60 hours of academic credit. Students pursuing the Media and Entertainment Industries minor in Radio-Television-Film can satisfy up to nine hours (of the fifteen required for the minor) by participating in the program.

The deadline to APPLY for Fall 2021 is March 1, 2021.

Call for Submissions!

Past in Process is an undergraduate-run journal from The University of Texas at Austin. We will be accepting submissions starting December 1st in all areas and traditions of historical studies.

 We are committed to fostering diverse voices that are not always heard in historical studies. To achieve this ideal, we aim to create opportunities for undergraduate students across disciplines and areas to engage with history and to publish their research in different formats. We strongly encourage women and persons of color to submit and welcome submissions across different periods and regions. Our staff consists of a multicultural group of undergraduate students working across various disciplines. We are committed to fostering diverse voices that are not always heard in historical studies.

Call for Applications !

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is now offering a number of travel scholarships to Liberal Arts majors for study abroad in Latin America, both for summer 2021 and for academic year 2021-2022.  For summer 2021, we are offering 16 $2,500 travel scholarships.  Students must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America this coming summer for a summer session and return with at least six hours of college credit.  For academic year 2021-2022, we will award six $5,000 travel scholarships for semester-long study abroad in Latin America.  Awardees must attend degree-granting institutions in Latin America and return with at least 12 hours of college credit.  These awards are merit-based.
