Built to Perform: UT Austin Steel Bridge Competes at the 2026 ASCE Frontier Student Symposium
From the first design sketches to the final timed construction, the UT Austin Steel Bridge Team spent months designing, modeling, fabricating, welding, and rehearsing the assembly of a competition-ready bridge.
At the 2026 ASCE Frontier Student Symposium, the team put that work to the test, finishing 15th overall while performing particularly well in efficiency and demonstrating meaningful improvements from previous years.

What is Steel Bridge?
UT Austin Steel Bridge combines structural analysis, fabrication expertise, and creative problem-solving to design and construct a 20-foot steel bridge to compete in an eight-category competition at the annual ASCE Symposium. Through this interdisciplinary project, members develop skills in design, manufacturing, and collaboration that prepare them for careers in the industry.
Competition Deliverables

Final Prototype
The 20-foot scale model steel bridge is evaluated based on aesthetics, lightness, stiffness, structural efficiency, and compliance with competition specifications.

Cost Estimation Sheet
The cost-estimation sheet documents the team’s projected expenses for fabricating and assembling according to competition rules and evaluates the team’s economic efficiency.

Poster Board
The poster board presents the design concept, explains the team’s fabrication and assembly process, and shows load tests and results.

Construction
The bridge is assembled in a timed competition under simulated site constraints.

Loading
The constructed bridge will be incrementally stacked with weights up to 2,500 lbs, pushing the bridge to its limits.
What We Do

Design
The design team plays a critical role in the early stages of the competition. During the fall, team members collaborate to brainstorm bridge concepts and finalize the overall geometry, including member specifications and connection requirements.

Fabrication
The fabrication team is responsible for cutting, fitting, and welding all steel members, ensuring each piece is prepared and assembled with precision for a strong, reliable bridge. Members gain hands-on experience with tools like angle cutters, drill presses, and welding machines.

Construction
The construction team races to build the bridge quickly and accurately within a fixed 30-minute time limit under simulated site constraints. Members are tested on their team coordination and efficiency under pressure.
