Prospective Lab Members

We are committed to increasing the diversity of the science and engineering workforce. People learn to do research in the UT Biomedical Informatics Lab at the undergraduate through visiting faculty levels.

Information for different types of prospective lab members is given below. Inquiries that are not submitted as instructed on this page cannot be processed.

We are often asked how to get a “big picture” view of the research portfolio of the BMIL. A good place to start is the book chapters, review articles, and commentaries on our Publications page.

Prospective High School Students

Rather than applying directly to our lab, high school students should apply to one of UT Austin’s programs for high school students. A list of K-12 opportunities at UT Austin is available from the Youth Protection Program.

Prospective Undergraduate Students

Submit a UT BMIL Undergraduate Research Application. Materials submitted by email cannot be processed.

Applications for Spring should be submitted no later than December 1st. Applications for Summer should be submitted no later than April 15th. Applications for Fall should be submitted no later than August 1st.

If we have an undergraduate research position available for you in the desired term, you will be notified approximately one week before that term begins. If we do not notify you of an available position, you are welcome to re-submit for consideration in another term.

Prospective Graduate Students

We are always looking for new graduate students who share our lab’s mission and values. The UT BMIL recruits graduate students primarily through the graduate program in Biomedical Engineering, but candidates from other programs, such as Electrical and Computer Engineering, will also be considered. Prospective BME graduate students should review the BME admissions procedures. While Prof. Markey would be happy to answer questions specifically about the research portfolio of the BMIL, please understand that she cannot make any predictions with respect to your chances of being admitted to the graduate program. Notice that the deadline for fall BME admissions is December 1st. If you have questions about graduate research in the BMIL, you can email us at bmil-applicant@utlists.utexas.edu; emails submitted to any other address cannot be processed. However, prospective graduate students are strongly encouraged to sign up for an appointment to speak with Prof. Markey (videoconference) rather than sending questions by email.

Prospective Postdoctoral Researchers

We are always looking for new postdoctoral researchers who share the BMIL’s mission and values. Please email a cover letter and a copy of your CV to bmil-applicant@utlists.utexas.edu; emails submitted to any other address cannot be processed.

Prospective Visiting Scholars

We are always looking for new visiting scholars who share the BMIL’s mission and values. Please email a cover letter and a copy of your CV to bmil-applicant@utlists.utexas.edu; emails submitted to any other address cannot be processed.
