Why is your research important?
Our research aims to understand how young children learn language. Vocabulary knowledge is one of the best predictors of academic achievement. We are interested in what supports children learn language successfully.
What will my child do?
Your child may watch short videos on a screen monitor, and interact with one of our research assistants. Your child may engage with puppets and fidget toys while we are also collecting data on their brain activity. We do this by placing a cap or headband on your child’s head. The headband or cap is attached to a “functional near-infrared spectroscopy” machine that will measure your child’s brain activity.
What is fNIRS? How does it work?
fNIRS stands for Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, which is a neuroimaging device used to look at the superficial layer of the brain called the cortex. Click here to learn more about how this technology works.
What happens after my child participates?
As a thank you for participating, you will be compensated for your time (up to $80 depending on the study). Your child will receive a certificate of completion and a gift, like a t-shirt or a plush toy.
How and when will my family be contacted for a study?
After completing an interest form, one of our lab team members will send you an email with information about our study. You may also receive a phone call or text message.
