The Be Well Texas program is funded through the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. The initiative aims to increase delivery of evidenced-based screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) services within three hospital settings: Dell Seton Medical Center (Austin, TX), Dell Children’s Medical Center (Austin, TX) and Ben Taub Hospital (Houston, TX). This project focuses on an integrated, public health approach for the delivery of early intervention to individuals with risky substance use and timely referral to substance abuse treatment for those identified as having a substance use disorder. This includes screening for unhealthy alcohol or drug use, providing counseling and motivational interviewing techniques, initiating standard-of-care medications during hospitalization, and providing inpatient and outpatient care coordination prior to hospital discharge. The goal is to reduce the morbidity and mortality related to substance use disorders (SUDs) and SUD-related diseases and conditions by integrating treatment modalities and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration.
