Undergraduate Research in Race, Ethnicity, & the Demography of Crime and Punishment

·      Opportunity to study social demography through course work and a mentored research experience with senior PRC graduate students

·      Program pays for room and board, and computing and research-related expenses

·      REU students receive a $4,000 stipend for participation in the 8 week program

·      Students participate in a 3-hour summer course during the first 4 weeks of the program

·      Second half of the program focus is on individual projects in collaboration with graduate student mentor and faculty director, David Kirk

·      Student papers are presented in the fall at a professional conference

·      This program is specifically geared toward students with junior standing who are seriously thinking about attending graduate school in the social sciences and, particularly, in sociology or demography

Do you love to write and have a passion for all things Internet?  Do you want a paid internship where you are constantly challenged to learn cutting edge strategies for improving online performance? If so, this may be the opportunity for you.

We are looking for motivated self-starters with initiative and creativity looking to gain experience in the growing fields of online marketing and search engine marketing (SEM).  Your work will directly impact the leading new home listing website, www.newhomesource.com.  The search marketing intern is responsible for assisting with the production, implementation, and execution of search marketing efforts.  Primary responsibilities are content creation and quantitative analysis of your results. This is a position designed to support BHI’s search marketing strategy.

This position requires a strong writing/editing background, knowledge of online communication, strong analytical skills and a researcher’s mindset.  He or she will work closely with the search marketing team as you learn how to develop and execute online search tactics supporting paid and organic search goals.

This position is full time (40 hours per week) to be worked Monday through Friday.    BHI is willing to work with students who could earn college credit.

Singer-songwriter, Darden Smith, and Positive Psychology Educator, Mary Judd, will describe how they designed a nationally-recognized program for Veterans based on what they each love to do: write songs and elevate people’s strengths. Using stories, photos, and song samples from their SongwritingWith:Soldiers retreats, the UT graduates will demonstrate how tapping into their own creativity and passions has greatly impacted the lives of others — and improved their own, too. Tips for identifying personal passions and creative approaches for helping groups in need will be shared. http://www.songwritingwithsoldiers.org

Attend the next information session—with pizza—on the faculty-led summer study abroad program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, “African Diaspora in the Americas,” taught by Associate Professor João Vargas (African and African Diaspora Studies). RSVP requested tocarla.silva@austin.utexas.edu.

Course dates are June 8 through July 17, 2015. Application deadline is Feb. 15. During the program, students will volunteer with the NGO Criola and its affiliates. Criola serves black women, teenagers and girls in Rio de Janeiro. Students receive credit for ANT 324L/391 African Diaspora in the Americas or ANT 379/391 Field Research in Social Anthropology. Scholarships available through CoLA, AADS, LLILAS and others.

Associate Professor Vargas is a native Brazilian who has worked for over 15 years on gendered dynamics of race in both Brazil and the United States. He has collaborated with Criola on this program for almost a decade.

The College of Liberal Arts Digital Storytelling Seminar Application

Liberal Arts is offering a free 12-week seminar focused on 10 video projects written, directed, produced, and edited by Liberal Arts undergraduates. Participants will relive and retell some of their most epic, real, tragic, and ecstatic college moments, while receiving hands-on experience in

·       Screenwriting and Storytelling

·       Cinematography

·       Editing

·       Graphic Effects

·       Careers in Digital Video Production

This is an introductory digital storytelling, film, and media production workshop with group productions of short films using high-definition video.

Participants will be provided with access to equipment, training, software, and direct support from working professionals in video production. Guest lecturers from the Austin film industry will instruct each seminar. These workshops will guide participants through the creation of their own digital story.

 

Students must commit to attending workshops that will be held on campus

January 21 – May 31, 2015

Productions have potential to continue into summer 2015

REQUIREMENTS

This seminar is restricted to Liberal Arts undergraduates.

The seminar is collaborative, and will result in the production of up to 10 short films that will be showcased online and at campus events in the fall of 2015. Participants will co-own the work with the University and be able to use it in the future for their own portfolios and creative purposes.  The University reserves the right to also use the material created for educational and promotional purposes.

Limited to no more than 30 students.
