Plan II HRC Event

In partnership with the Michener Center for Writers and the Harry Ransom Center, Plan II’s Glickman Lectureship presents a reading with the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Carl Phillips. Phillips will read from his 2024 collection, Scattered Snows, to the North. The reading will be followed by a conversation with the poet Jennifer Elise Foerster and an audience Q&A. A book signing and reception will take place immediately after.

LAH 340L: Legal Internships (FALL)

Explore the role of lawyers and how the practice of law has shaped American society. Intern in law offices or legal settings. Gain practical experience and first-hand knowledge of different legal fields. Internships help shape classroom discussions. Examine the practice of law and how lawyers serve the public interest and larger society The equivalent of three lecture hours a week for one semester with an addition 9-10 internship hours a week for one semester. This class is designed to have an experiential learning component.

This course has a two-step application process. The application deadline is September 4th, 2025 at noon. Start the application by completing Part I of the application using the link here. Once Part I has been approved, you will be emailed Part II. The second part of the application includes a learning agreement to be filled out electronically by you and your internship supervisor. Once you have completed both Parts I and II, LAH advisors will manually add you to the course.

Interested students can also attend upcoming info sessions:

  • Mon. March 31st at noon (in-person, LAH Commons Room)
  • Tues. April 1st at 3 pm (over Zoom)
  • Wed. April 2nd at 1pm (over Zoom)

LAH Study Abroad Scholarships

The Liberal Arts Honors Program will award scholarships in varying amounts to support LAH students and Humanities majors who will be studying abroad in the Spring, Summer, and/or Fall.  An LAH student may apply for this scholarship by writing a one-page statement of his or her study abroad plans. The statement should include where and what the student will be studying, the projected cost involved, and the role that study abroad and the mastery of a foreign language plays in the student’s academic and career goals.

The deadline for Fall/Summer Abroad is April 1st, 11:59 pm. Maymesters may also apply in Spring, as long as they are able to confirm participation.

Please submit your application online through the LASSO Scholarship system!

Both LAH students and Humanities majors are eligible to apply for the LAH Study Abroad scholarship. Please contact the LAH office with any questions.

Husain Family Legal Essay Competition

The Liberal Arts Honors Program is happy to announce the Husain Family Legal Essay Competition. To enter the competition, please write and submit an essay that responds to the prompt below:

Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment Rights

  • The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution says that no person shall be “deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” This is commonly known as substantive due process—i.e., the rights of people that are not listed in the Constitution but which the Supreme Court has recognized as essential to daily life. Over time, the Supreme Court has identified new rights—e.g., the right to privacy, the right to interracial marriage, and the right to contract for one’s own labor—as having Constitutional protection. The right to an abortion (as a matter of privacy) was recently removed from this list, in Dobbs v. Jackson, 597 U.S. 215 (2022). But what limits or lack of limits exist on the Supreme Court to categorize or un-categorize rights as substantive due process are not clear. What should the criteria be to identify new rights or to remove rights from Fifth and Fourteenth Amendment protections?

Eligibility: Current Liberal Arts Honors Scholars

Specifications: 750 – 1,000 words, double-spaced with name, EID, and essay title.

Awards:

  • 1st Prize: $1,000
  • 2nd Prize: $500
  • 3rd Prize: $250

LAH Creative Writing Awards

The LAH Literary Awards support excellence in creative writing and acknowledge the accomplishments of our student community.  Three prizes will be offered: one in poetry, one in fiction, and one in literary nonfiction.  Please see below for detailed instructions on how to submit to each category:

Poetry:  Submit a portfolio of 6-8 poems (12pt. Times New Roman) that does not exceed 12 pages.

Fiction:  Submit a portfolio of fiction writing (12pt. Times New Roman) that does not exceed 5,000 words.

Literary Nonfiction:  Submit a portfolio of non-fiction writing (12pt. Times New Roman) that does not exceed 5,000 words.

Your contest submissions are due by 12pm CST on February 17th.  Please send your submissions to Dr. Brandon Dean Lamson utilizing his email linked here. Winning entries will be published online. Winners will also receive a $500 cash prize and will participate in a reading with the contest judges at the Cactus Cafe on April 17th.
