The Harry Ransom Center is seeking volunteers to engage the public in the work of an internationally renowned humanities archive, museum, and research library. The Ransom Center’s collections provide unique insights into the creative process of writers and artists, deepening our understanding of literature, photography, film, art, and the performing arts. Our public exhibitions and programs showcase the collections, broaden the reach of the Center’s work, and seek innovative ways to add to the intellectual and public mission of the Center.

Volunteer duties include giving tours, working at special events, and greeting visitors when they arrive. Being a volunteer requires deep curiosity and the desire to share your knowledge with the public. Volunteers enjoy unique access to the collections, training, and complimentary membership as part of an ongoing commitment. Become part of a community of people who share a passion for the arts and humanities.

Our program accommodates the needs and schedules of our volunteers. There are positions that require three hours a month, and others three hours a week – your choice. We are seeking interested applicants for January through December 2023.

We encourage applications from any individual (student, staff, graduate student, or community member) who is interested in the mission of the Ransom Center. Applicants don’t need any prior experience, just an interest in learning and engaging with the public.

The Department for Middle Eastern Studies runs the Arabic Summer Institute (ASI) every summer and offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced training. The summer institute is open to all qualified students and the material covered/credit earned is equal to one full academic year of language learning! This can be a wonderful opportunity for students who don’t have time for 6 hour classes in their regular semester schedules.

The Polish Club at UT Austin is excited to officially announce its fourth and final guest speaker of the semester: former Solidarity leader, political prisoner, Member of the Polish Parliament (1991-2001), and current democratic activist Władysław Frasyniuk. Mr. Frasyniuk will be delivering a speech entitled “The State of Democracy in Poland Today” on Friday, December 2, 2022, from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Central Time over Zoom. Mr. Frasyniuk will speak for 30-minutes and take Q&A for 30-minutes. When registering, there will be a section to submit questions for Mr. Frasyniuk. The moderator will select the five or so most interesting questions and ask them anonymously.

Graduate student conversation 10:30am CST (@ PCL Learning Lab 3): Dr. Steele will visit the CDSG to meet with graduate students and talk about her book Digital Black Feminisms and methods in critical digital studies. If you’re interested in research devoted to Black feminisms, technology, digital media, and social justice, this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to think with a leading scholar and others committed to this line of inquiry. Public online talk at 4pm CST (register for her talk here): Dr. Steele will deliver a talk titled “From the Archive to TikTok: Care and Feeding as Praxis in Studying Black Women and Technology.” You’re welcome to share this talk with your contacts across and beyond campus.

The Sanger Learning Center is hiring student educators for next spring, and we would love for you to share far and wide with your advisees. Applications for most positions are due November 6.

We are hiring for Tutors (all areas, but especially PHY, ECO, Math, languages, and ACC/FIN), Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders, and Peer-Led Undergraduate Study (PLUS) Coordinators. All positions start at $14/hour.

We love motivated students, but interested applicants need not have a flawless academic record—great student educators tend to be those who can communicate well, manage their time, empathize with peers, and recognize that all learning is a process. My name is Jinane Sounny-Slitine. I am a doctoral candidate in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin. I am looking for undergraduate students who are interested in participating in a research study that will serve as part of my doctorate degree requirements.
I am looking for undergraduate students who are interested in participating in an exploratory research study focused on understanding how Arab American college students experience a sense of belonging on campus and make meaning of their racial and ethnic identity. Your perspective will help contribute to research about Arab American college students’ experiences and ways institutions can better support them.

To participate you must:

• Self-identify as Arab American
• Be born in the United States
• Have a least one parent who immigrated to the United States from the Southwest Asia or North
• Africa (SWANA) region and identifies as Arab

Enrolled as at least a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Texas at Austin Participants who fit the above criteria will complete a brief demographic questionnaire and two individual interviews. Participation in this project, including the demographic questionnaire and interviews, will roughly take two to three hours to complete. The interviews will be held on Zoom© and scheduled at the participants’ convenience. Participants will choose their own pseudonyms and the participating institution will also receive a pseudonym. All identifying information and responses collected will be masked and kept confidential.

After completing the interviews, participants will earn $40.00 gift card for each interview. Potential indirect benefits to participants include the opportunity to contribute to expanding the knowledge and understanding of Arab American college students.
