Each spring, with the generous support of the University Co-op, UT recognizes up to five undergraduate students for superior scholarly or creative achievement. Four will receive awards of $5,000, and one student will receive the top award of $7,000!

The application and all supporting materials must be received by Wednesday, March 20.

Who can apply?

• Applicants must be either a junior or senior currently enrolled at UT or a UT graduate who received their undergraduate degree in December 2023.
• Students must demonstrate superior scholarly or creative achievement through a notable paper or thesis, research project, creative or artistic endeavor, or other product of their academic work.
• Submitted work should be finished or almost finished (e.g. a complete draft of a thesis or research paper).
• Previous Mitchell Award recipients are eligible only if the submitted work is a completely different project.

Applications for UT’s Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUF) are being accepted through February 15th, 2024.  MMUF’s goal is to expand access to the professoriate in higher education by helping students confidently navigate academia and pursue a PhD.

MMUF fellows:

• Engage in an intellectual community through weekly seminars and workshops focused on topics including Applying to Grad School, Conducting Research, Abstract Writing, and Conference Presentations.
• Receive individualized mentorship from program coordinators and faculty advisors.
• Pursue independent research projects during their time in the program, including over the summer(s).
• Receive financial support to conduct academic year and summer research, apply to graduate school, and explore professional development opportunities.
• Obtain post-graduate benefits, including loan repayment and graduate research funding.

Who Can Apply:

• Students who are interested in earning a PhD and pursuing a career in academia.
• Current sophomores or juniors graduating in 2026.
• Students whose major is in one of the MMUF-designated social science, humanities, or fine arts fields (view list of Eligible Fields on website).
• Students committed to working with a faculty mentor on a Mellon-approved research project during their junior and senior years.

The Texas Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) is a work of multi-disciplinary research produced and edited by University of Texas at Austin undergraduate students. The Journal is published every spring semester, circulated across campus, and housed in the Library of Congress. Moreover, the URJ organizes various events throughout the academic year to promote student engagement with research on campus.

IDH Research Apprenticeships are mixed level, undergraduate and graduate, research experiences that include opportunities to work on faculty and staff-led digital humanities projects at UT for credit and a small stipend ($250 for each undergraduate student and $500 for each graduate student). Faculty and staff sponsors can support one undergraduate student and one graduate student.

The Spring 2024 topic will be “Digital Humanities and Social Justice Archives.”
