Internships available with the University of Texas School of Law Immigration Clinic 2023-2024 academic year 

The University of Texas School of Law Immigration Clinic is recruiting two undergraduate students who will be in their junior or senior year for year-long legal internships from Fall 2023 through Spring 2024. 

The Immigration Clinic provides crucial representation to vulnerable low-income immigrants. The cases handled by the Clinic are diverse and illustrate the breadth of immigration practice. The Clinic has handled cases for clients from, among other countries, Colombia, El Salvador, Eritrea, Venezuela, Honduras, Afghanistan and Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Clinic’s cases range from asylum claims to the defense of long-time residents against deportation. 

The commitment for the intern involves 10-12 hours per week of work in the Immigration Clinic. Hours are  divided to support the various aspects of the Clinic’swork. The position is unpaid; the internship has been recognized for credit awards with other undergraduate internship courses. 

This internship is an ideal position for students considering law school and/or working in the fields of immigration and human rights. 

Internship details: 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Written and oral command of the Spanish language, demonstrated organizational skills, demonstrated regular and punctual attendance at work and professional demeanor, as well as experience with internet research, printers, and Microsoft Word. 

PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION: To provide support to Immigration Clinic faculty and students through casework, research, translation and interpretation (English-Spanish). Assist with other projects and tasks directly related to Clinic work as assigned. The internship will be performed in person at the Immigration  Clinic, which is housed within the University of Texas School of Law. 

TERM: The internship runs from the Fall 2023 semester through the Spring 2024 semester, following the  academic calendar.

Johnson-Bates Respect and Inclusion Presidential Scholarship 

If you are an LGBTQIA+ advocate in the Jackson School of Geosciences, there is a scholarship for you! Please tell anyone who qualifies to apply for the Johnson-Bates Respect and Inclusion Presidential Scholarship.

The purpose of the Johnson-Bates Respect and Inclusion Presidential Scholarship Program is to provide a college scholarship to students who play an active role in stopping or preventing bullying (particularly as it is displayed towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer people), as well as work to improve the climate on campus for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQIA+) communities.

A minimum of one (1) $2,500 undergraduate scholarship will be available per semester for a total of $5,000 per year. Scholarships are awarded for one year only, but recipients may re-apply for a second year. Applicants must be majoring in the Jackson School of Geosciences or other connected fields.

Criteria for Eligibility

1. Applicants must be full-time University of Texas at Austin undergraduate students enrolled in any STEM discipline, with a preference for Geoscience majors & minors, including, Environmental Science, General Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science and Sustainability, Geological Sciences Teaching, Geosystems Engineering and Hydrogeology, Geological Sciences.
2. Applicants must have completed at least 45 credit hours in residence at UT Austin by the time the award is received.
3. Applicants must have demonstrated leadership surrounding issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community, but do not need to identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ population in order to qualify.
4. Applicants should have demonstrated or expressed interest in volunteerism, student service within LGBTQIA+ organizations, The University of Texas at Austin student government programming and initiatives, and leadership development training in LGBTQIA+ diversity.
5. An applicant must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.

We’re concluding our documentary film series this semester—which included films on the “Dictator’s Playbook” used by Kim Il Sung of North Korea and Saddam Hussein of Iraq—with a film called “A Thousand Cuts.” This film is the story of Nobel Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, who used the tools of the social media age to resist the disinformation and oppression of Rodrigo Duterte’s strong-man rule of the modern Philippines.
