Workshop: Introduction to Portuguese for Spanish Speakers

Have you ever wanted to travel to Brazil or thought about taking Portuguese classes, but weren’t sure how to get started? Join us for a hands-on workshop that will show you that you really can learn to speak Portuguese! The workshop will introduce you to the tools to start speaking and understanding the Portuguese language along with Portuguese resources at The University of Texas. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to practice speaking Portuguese over coffee and Brazilian snacks.

The workshop will be led by Vivian Flanzer, coordinator of UT’s Portuguese Language Program since 2001 and creator of the website ClicaBrasil.

The workshop is free and open to UT faculty, staff, and students. Beginners or early intermediate speakers only. No prior knowledge of Portuguese is necessary; at least an intermediate level of Spanish is recommended.

UT Austin Graduate School Fair – Tuesday, October 11

Meet representatives from graduate programs across the country and around the world at the UT Austin Graduate School Fair, October 11 from 10am – 2pm in the Texas Union Ballroom. Over 100 programs will be in attendance!

During the Grad Fair, there will be panel discussions with UT faculty and with current grad students. The panels will talk about the benefits, challenges, and realities of graduate school, to help you decide if grad school is for you! Join us in the Sinclair Suite of the TX Union from 10:30 – 11:30am for the Faculty Panel and from 12:30 – 1:30pm for the Grad Student Panel.

Plan II PreMed Meeting

Next Plan II PreMed Meeting will be next Wednesday, October 5th at 7pm in CRD 007B.  We will be hosting Dr. Winnie Whitaker, a pediatric emergency doctor.  Dr. Whitaker graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio in 2001, and she is affiliated with Dell Children’s and UMC Brackenridge.  We will have food!

Description

Harry Houdini, the legendary stage illusionist, also made his mark in film. In the 1919 silent film “The Grim Game”, Houdini stars as a man who has been jailed for a murder he did not commit. He uses his talents to escape and find the real killers. Eric Colleary, Cline Curator of Theater and Performing Arts, introduces the film and the riches of the Center’s Harry Houdini collection. Not rated, 71 minutes.

Eula Biss campus visit, plus free books for honors students

Essayist Eula Biss, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, will give a public talk in the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007) on Tuesday, October 4th, at 7 p.m. Saloncalled Biss’s Notes From No Man’s Land “the most accomplished book of essays anyone has written or published so far in the 21st century. It provokes, troubles, charms, and heckles the reader, and it raises more questions than it answers.” Biss has written on race, family, religion and cultural identity. Her latest book, On Immunity: An Inoculation, explores the history of medical science and the pernicious myths that perpetuate anxieties about vaccination. This event is free and open to everyone. American Foreign Relations Scholarship

The Department of Government is accepting applications for a James Roach Fellowship in American Foreign Relations. Fellowships will support research and/or writing, or foreign study or travel, and/or work experience in the American foreign relations field relating to South or Southeast Asia.

Apply for Texas 4000

Texas 4000 is an 18-month leadership development program where riders learn resiliency training, decision-making, fundraising, and public speaking, as well as receive one-on-one mentorship all while training to bike from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska to raise money for cancer research and survivor programs. 

Texas 4000 supports UT Biomedical Engineering, MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Gundersen Medical Center, Young Adult Cancer Canada, First Descents, and Brent’s Place. 

If you are interested in becoming a Texas 4000 2018 Rider, we encourage you to attend an info session this fall. They will be from 6:00-7:30pm on Tuesday 9/27 (UTC 3.134) and Wednesday 9/28 (UTC 3.134).
