Apply for the Semester in Los Angeles (UTLA) Program

The Semester in Los Angeles (UTLA) program is currently accepting applications for Summer 2017 and beyond. The deadline to apply (for Summer 2017 only) is October 1st, 2016. 

Information sessions are scheduled for the following dates:

Tuesday, September 27 at 12:00PM in BMC 5.102. 

Wednesday, September 28 at 4:00PM in BMC 5.102.

Thursday, September 29 at 1:00PM in CMA 5.136. 

These sessions will be general in nature and intended for anyone with questions about the program, online application, costs, L.A., etc.  Phil Nemy, UTLA Director, will be in Austin and hosting these sessions.

Interested in being a LAH Information Session Student Ambassador?

Are you a lover of LAH and want to spread the word to prospective students and family members?

I am looking for a few students who are comfortable speaking to prospective students and their parents about their experience in  LAH, UT, and student life in general.  The information sessions begin Friday, September 9 from 9:00-11:00 am and are held every Monday and Friday until November 28.  You can stay the entire time, or choose an hour block. 9:00-10:00 or 10:00-11:00. I especially need an ambassador to escort the prospective students to Reacting to the Past in SZB 380 at 9:50.   If you are interested, please let Stacey know as soon as possible. Freshman Representative Application

The Freshman Representative Application is now live! 

Liberal Arts Honors invites freshmen who are LAH Student Council members to apply for the position.  Three to five first year students will serve as the voice of their class to the council and help plan events to engage their peers.  It is a great opportunity to get to know other LAHers, old and new.

We expect attendance at every LAHSC meeting and LAH 102H class, will have you make announcements to your class, plan social events, and assist with merchandise and Formal ticket sales.

We’re so excited to see how you all get involved and the ideas your bring to the organization! We hope that you will apply to the Freshman Representative position and can’t wait to talk with you at your interview.  The application is due September 6 at 11:59 pm.  Make sure to sign up for an interview slot once you receive the confirmation email upon submission.

LAH Student Council

Liberal Arts Honors Student Council plans social events, provides academic guidance, and offers volunteering opportunities to engage the LAH community.

Meetings are held weekly and begin this Tuesday, August 30 at 6pm in Mezes 1.120.  We hope that you’ll join us if you are interested in membership, events, and freshmen leadership opportunities.

Rapoport-King Scholarship Announcement

Audre and Bernard Rapoport of Waco, Texas, have provided an endowment that enables the College of Liberal Arts to provide scholarship and research support for students who are writing a thesis in one of the Plan I Departmental Honors programs.  These scholarships honor Audre and Bernard Rapoport and Robert D. King, former Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.  Fifteen Rapoport-King Scholarships will be awarded for 2016-2017.

To be eligible for a Rapoport-King Scholarship you must be planning to graduate May 2017 with Plan I degree and must be writing a senior honors thesis in a Plan I Departmental Honors program (Plan II students are not eligible for this scholarship).  Fellows will be chosen on basis of academic record, the quality of the thesis proposal, and financial need.  As Mr. Rapoport has put it: the candidates should be “smart and deserving.”   Rapoport Fellows are expected to meet on a regular basis with other Rapoport Fellows and their faculty mentors.  Those chosen will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship for the senior year only.  In addition, faculty mentors will be provided with $1,000 for research support, and it is expected that student and mentor will work closely together.

Accepting Submissions to the Texas Undergraduate Research Journal

The University of Texas at Austin Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) is now accepting submissions for its 15th volume.

Papers will be reviewed by University of Texas professors of the appropriate field and research interests, and accepted papers will be published in print as well as online

on our website. The author of the winning article among those published will be selected to receive a $200 prize, and a runner-up will receive a $100 prize.

The Directorate of Operations’ (DO) mission is to strengthen national security and foreign policy objectives through the clandestine collections of human intelligence and by covert action as directed by the President. CIA DO Officers recruit the human sources who provide the foreign intelligence that cannot be collected any other way and that is needed by US policymakers, the military, and law enforcement services to protect the national security and policy interests of the US. There are several careers in the DO (all trained to recruit sources and write intelligence reports) as follows:

·         Operations Officers:  On the front line of human intelligence collection.  Clandestinely recruit and handle sources of foreign intelligence worldwide.

·         Collection Management Officers:  (link to US foreign policy community and Intelligence Community analysts).  Must have a solid understanding of international issues and overseas operating environments.  Manage the collection, evaluation and dissemination of foreign intelligence information.

·         Staff Operations Officer:  (link to headquarters, acting as an advocate for all operational support ).  Guide, coordinate and support overseas intelligence operations to ensure they are run safely, smoothly and productively. Have a thorough understanding of operations and develop areas of expertise such as terrorism, counter-proliferation or a geographic region.

·         Operational Targeting Officer:  Directly support and drive complex worldwide operations to develop actionable intelligence against the highest priority threats to US national security.

·         DO Language Officer:  Apply advanced foreign language skills as well as cultural insight to provide high-quality translation, interpretation and support to a variety of DO operations worldwide. Applicants with mission-critical languages are highly encouraged to apply.

Journalism Course Open for Non-Journalism Students

J 355F Living in the Information Age

Living in the Information Age will examine information technologies with particular emphasis on social and mobile media. In particular, this course will examine how digital and mobile technologies are used by the Millennial Generation and with what effects. The goal of the course is to understand how the communication and information technologies evolve and the cultural, economic, political and social implications of such technologies for society.
