Pinto Carver Essay Contest Open to All LAHers! Due January 14 (First Day of Classes)
The Pinto Carver Essay Contest – 2013
Style, in its finest sense, is the last acquirement
of the educated mind; it is also the most useful.
It pervades the whole being. The administrator
with a sense of style hates waste; the engineer
with a sense for style economizes his material;
the artisan with a sense for style prefers good
work. Style is the ultimate morality of mind.
-Alfred North Whitehead
The Topic:
Campaign LAH: The Pursuit of Excellence is seeking to raise 1.5 million dollars to help fund scholarships and research, internship, and study aboard opportunities for Liberal Arts Honors students. Many donors want to know what LAH is and what is its “brand.” Write an essay in which you describe what you believe LAH to be and also, in six to ten words craft a “brand.” The University’s “What Starts Here Changes the World” is one such successful brand, “Don’t Mess With Texas” another. Needless to say, the more well developed your thoughts, the more specific your language, the better. And for this Campaign to succeed, we need your best thoughts.

Humanity in Action
A note from Dr. Carver:
Ryan Gayman, a Senior Fellow with Humanity In Action (see below) will be on campus on Monday, December 17 and would very much like to talk with students about the Humanity In Action Fellowship. He will be available on that Monday, 2:00 to 3:00 pm in the Conference Room, Fourth Floor of Gebauer, for a group meeting, and he will be happy to meet with individual students after that, 3:00 to 5:00 pm. This is a terrific program, and I hope many of you will be interested in applying, if not this year, then next. Note well: the deadline for the 2013 application is January 10th.
Humanity in Action is now accepting applications for its international human rights fellowship programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon and Warsaw.
The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of students to study human rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values. Humanity in Action invites applications from talented college students and recent graduates who are intellectually gifted, mature, independent and passionate about human rights and social justice. Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2011 and 2012 are eligible to apply.
The fellowship will begin in Washington, DC on May 27, 2013 at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place in Europe from June 1 to June 30, 2013. Humanity in Action covers all costs associated with participation. The application deadline is January 10, 2013. Learn more at www.humanityinaction.org/apply.

Volunteer in the LAH Office this Spring!
LAHers,
We are looking for some volunteers for the Spring semester. If you are interested in volunteering for a few hours each week in the Spring, you’ll have the opportunity to chat with current students, prospective students, get free food and a chance to get to know everyone else in the office better. Job duties include answering the phone, greeting visitors, collecting mail, making copies and running errands as needed. We do rely heavily on our volunteers, so showing up on time and taking the position seriously is important.
Also, if you have a work-study (part of your financial aid package) let us know – we may be able to hire you.
Please e-mail Barbara Carlson bbc@austin.utexas.edu if you are interested.
PS. We will be in the new location CLA 2.104 starting December 13.
LAH Office Moving to the New Liberal Arts Building
On December 13, we will move from our much loved Gebauer location to CLA – the new College of Liberal Arts Building located next to the SAC. We’re looking forward to the new space. The computer lab will have 8 computers and the Commons Room will be nearly 3 times the size of the current room.
Our exact room will be CLA 2.104 and the number will stay the same – 512-471-3458.
Please stop by when you come back in January to check out the new digs.
3rd Annual All-Honors Formal!
Tickets will soon be on sale in the LAH office for this year’s All-Honors Formal. It will be taking place Saturday December 8 from 7-10 pm at the Recess Arcade Bar on 6th Street. There will be live music and a bar for those over 21. Like last year there will be a bus regularly leaving from campus to take people downtown. Tickets are $10 in the office or $12 at the door. You do NOT need to be in an honors program to buy a ticket!
