Nurturing Parenting Program
Summary of intervention/curriculum including duration/length:
The Nurturing Parenting is a series of ten independent 60 to 90-minute lessons. The lessons are a versatile means of educating families in the community on the philosophy and skills of Nurturing Parenting, a proven evidenced based parenting program. IHCP Staff will implement Nurturing Parenting instructional lessons in 60 to 90 minutes and will be delivered once or twice per week depending on the agreed upon implementation schedule with participants and site availability considered. This intervention will be extended to adults identifying with needs related to family/parenting concerns.
Lessons Covered:
- The Philosophy and Practices of Nurturing Parenting with the goal to increase parents’ knowledge of nurturing parenting and nurturing as a lifestyle
- Ages and Stages of Growth for Infants and Toddlers with the goal to increase parent’s awareness of appropriate expectations of children
- Ways to Enhance Positive Brain Development in Children and Teens with the goal to increase parents’ ability to promote healthy brain development in their children and teens
- Communicating With Respect with the goal to help parents recognize and communicate their feelings and the feelings of their children
- Building Self-Wroth in Children with the goal to increase parents’ skills in developing family morals, values, and rules
- Understanding Feelings with the goal to help parents recognize and understand their feelings and the feelings of their children
- Understanding and Developing Family Morals, Values and Rules with the goal to increase parents’ skills in developing family morals, values, and rules
- Praising Children and their Behavior with the goal to increase parents’ understanding of the importance of praise
- Alternatives to Spanking with the goal to increase parents’ awareness of the other ways to discipline besides spanking
- Learning Positive Ways to Deal with Stress and Anger with the goal to increase parents’ ability to recognize and handle stress.
Location: Intervention is being provided during home-visits as well as through the facilitation of services via Zoom to accommodate participants unable to attend in person services at BHSST Office. In addition, due to a recent partnership with Buckner Family Hope Center, implementation of services is also extended at this external/rural community- based office located in the city of Penitas, a rural community, to facilitate access to services to participants residing in colonia areas.
Learning to Breathe (L2B)
Summary of intervention/curriculum including duration/length:
A mindfulness-based curriculum created for classroom or group settings. This curriculum is intended to strengthen attention and emotion regulation, cultivate wholesome emotions like gratitude and compassion, expand the repertoire of stress management skills, and help participants integrate mindfulness into daily life. Each lesson includes age-appropriate discussion, activities, and opportunities to practice mindfulness in a group setting.
Implementation is built around the acronym BREATHE (six themes) in 45 minutes and delivered in 6, 12, or 18 sessions once per week with participants and site availability considered.
- Locations/site: Intervention is being provided at BHSST Office as well as during home-visits and via Zoom for those participants/families unable to attend in person services. Services have also been provided in person at a satellite office in the City of Raymondville, TX. In addition, due a recent partnership with Buckner Family Hope Center, implementation of services is also extended at this external/rural community-based office located in the City of Penitas to facilitate access to services to participants residing in colonia areas.

Please note:
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is NOT an intervention provided by the program, rather, it is an additional strategy included during the implementation of Interventions as the practices learned through the program help and allow the participants to manage their attention to help them cultivate self-awareness. All IHCP staff have completed the 8-week training for MBSR and is also a pre-requisite to complete training for the L2B curriculum.
