- The Division seeks to admit about 4 new graduate students per year. All students applying for graduate work in the Division will compete for admission in a single pool and enter with the expectation of pursuing a PhD in Ethnomusicology or Historical Musicology.
- All students admitted to graduate work in the Division PhD programs will be offered funding support for 5 years / 10 semesters contingent on maintaining satisfactory progress-to-degree along the benchmarks outlined below. (Division support is defined as any support designated by the Division faculty, including TA positions, Recruitment Fellowships, or any other fellowships/scholarships for which the Division has the ability to nominate students.)
- The Division PhD degrees require 54 credit hours of pre-candidacy coursework (9 credit hours per semester x 6 semesters), plus a minimum of 6 credit hours of post-candidacy dissertation work, for a total of 60 hours. Students entering the PhD programs with a Master’s degree in hand will be given the opportunity to accelerate their progress to degree up to a year by petition to the Division.
- If you wish to apply, please see the General School of Music information on degree programs, scholarships, tuition and admissions information.
- If you have questions and can’t find the answers in the online materials, please contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator.
- The Division strongly recommends that prospective graduate students contact one or more Division faculty whom they perceive as potential mentors in the program as a first step in the application process.
- While is no admission examination, all graduate students entering the Butler School of Music are asked to take a diagnostic examination in music theory.
