Erin is spending part of her summer at the Children’s Wellness Clinic in Dell Valle to help get children vaccinated for the upcoming school year.
If you are looking for an externship where you stay near Austin and work with children and babies, the Children’s Wellness Center Externship might be for you!
This opportunity:
- Allows student nurses to work alongside Registered Nurses at a pediatric clinic in Del Valle.
- Begins with a mandatory orientation at the end of July and then consists of 12-hour workweeks through August 25.
- Offers a stipend and also gives nursing students an opportunity to earn a required credit for a Specialized Topics in Nursing course.
The application process is straightforward. Advisors usually bring applications to spring advising sessions, or provide an online application link. The one page application due May 1, asks questions like, “Why do you want this internship?” and “What is your previous experience working with children and vaccinations?” Selected students are notified by the end of May.
Personally, I am so excited for this opportunity and although I have not gone through orientation yet, I expect to get a lot of experience administering vaccinations to children and babies, well-child check-ups, and primary care services. I am so thankful to the School of Nursing for providing us with such a wide variety of externship opportunities. I can’t wait to start on my externship journey!
