Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital: Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital offers students opportunities to learn about the roles and functions of Child Life Specialists. Our Child Life Internship and Practicum Programs enable students to observe and perform a variety of Child Life services, all under the supervision of certified Child Life Specialists. To those purposes, the programs afford students the opportunity to experience a variety of patient and family issues, to take advantage of regular educational sessions, and to engage in an ongoing discussion of the student experience.

Nurse Extern positions provide student nurses an opportunity to work under the direction of a Registered Nurse and to gain experience in the areas of the nursing profession, nursing processes, and nursing practice.
Cook Children’s Hospital: Cook Children’s nursing externship program offers an exceptional pediatric learning opportunity to enhance the extern’s role transition, reinforcement of skills, and development of new knowledge.
Houston Methodist Hospital: Houston Methodist is pleased to offer baccalaureate nursing students the opportunity to enhance their learning and understanding of their chosen profession through an internship in our Houston Methodist Advancement into Professional Practice Program (MAPP). Whether you choose the year-round program offered for Houston area students or the summer program specifically for students outside the Houston and Galveston region, you will experience hands-on training while working side by side with leading registered nurses (RNs) in direct patient care.
MD Anderson: The PSNE summer program is a 10-week summer externship where selected applicants will be assigned to work under the direct supervision of registered nurse preceptors in one of our many clinical inpatient specialty areas. In addition to the clinical experience, students participate in courses taught by nursing experts and other disciplines. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Introduction to Oncology Nursing, Pathophysiology of Cancer, Oncologic Emergencies, Critical Thinking, and Treatment Modalities.
Methodist Health System: The Methodist externship program began in 2002, and it allows senior-level nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a real hospital setting. Depending on their areas of interest and where they might like to work after graduation, externs may work in: Women’s services, Labor and delivery, Telemetry, Intensive care, Surgery, Emergency, Medical/surgical, and other areas.
Parkland Health and Hospital System: There’s something special about Parkland nurses. You can see it in the way they handle challenges. It’s an inner strength and an outward smile. It’s a desire to use their training and skills to the fullest every day. The Collegiate Fellow Intern performs specified patient care activities and basic clerical tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse and is committed to the provision of patient-centered/ patient valued care.
St. David’s Medical Center: The Nurse Externship Program is an innovative work-study program designed to enhance and apply skills needed to work in the clinical setting while attending school and working in a PRN position.
Texas Health Harris Methodist: Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth’s 9-week summer program for BSN students that have completed their Junior 2 semester. If selected, attendance and completion of the first week of orientation is mandatory. The remaining 8 weeks (4- 2-week rotations) will be spent shadowing a nurse preceptor according to the preceptor schedule. Interns will rotate through a variety of patient units with the opportunity to choose two rotations in Specialty Areas such as Critical Care, Emergency Department and Women and Infants. This is a paid, 9-week Internship that focuses on the Intern learning the role of the RN in an acute care setting.
Texas Health Huguley- Fort Worth South: Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South currently offers one unique Nurse Extern Program. Upon acceptance, orientation dates will be scheduled which include General Hospital Orientation, Nursing Orientation, iConnect Training, Extraordinary Service Training (SHARE), Body Mechanics and Nurse Extern orientation. Nurse Extern competencies will be assessed during the Extern specific orientation.
Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas: Are you looking for a great opportunity to begin a career in healthcare? You’ve come to the right place. Texas Health is excited to introduce our 4-week Patient Care Technician Apprentice Program! The program was developed to create a workplace that reflects the diverse communities we are privileged to serve. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children: Scottish Rite Hospital’s Summer Nurse Extern Program offers a paid opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a pediatric setting while learning performance expectations of an entry-level staff nurse. Externs get the chance to attend educational seminars, in-services and join patients at one of the hospital’s specialized summer camps.
UT Southwestern Careers: The UT Southwestern Summer Externship Program is open to students who are classified as Junior II or Senior I nursing students graduating in December or coming May. Requires current enrollment in a BSN program and a minimum 3.0 GPA; with a current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.

Adventist Healthcare (MD): If you’re working towards a bachelor’s degree in nursing, put your classroom studies to use during the Student Nurse Externship. The externship is a paid, full-time job shadowing and training program that takes place over eight weeks during the summer between your junior and senior year. You’ll learn from a supportive preceptor and other experienced nursing educators.
Rochester Regional Health (NY): Learning how to be a great nurse extends far beyond the classroom. Our EXCEL program is designed specifically for nursing students. Rochester Regional Health is dedicated to providing outstanding experiences to nursing students in the Rochester area. As an EXCEL Nurse Intern you will work as a patient care technician, side by side with an experienced nurse, to put the skills, knowledge, and lessons you’ve learned into practice.
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (PA): The Department of Nursing Education at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) offers a Summer Nurse Extern Program and an Oncology Nurse Fellowship. Nurse Extern Program: The 10-week program enables students entering their senior year to become acquainted with the clinical setting, apply academic knowledge to practice, work with nurse preceptors to provide hands-on patient care and participate in educational seminars. Oncology Nurse Fellowship: The 10-week program is designed to help stimulate career interest and foster the professional development of potential pediatric oncology nurses. The program is open to students entering their senior year who are enrolled in a bachelor’s of nursing program.
Children’s National Medical Center (DC): Summer Nurse Trainee Program (formerly called the Child Care Technician (CCT) Program) for nursing students who are at least one-half of the way through their nursing program and have completed a medical/ surgical and/ or pediatric clinical rotation.
Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (NH): Dartmouth Hitchcock’s Nurse Extern Program gives nursing students who have completed their junior year the opportunity to work with experienced nurses in a dynamic and supportive clinical environment. You will work side-by-side highly skilled RN Preceptors who will facilitate the learning experience. The program assists you to develop a greater level of self-confidence. As an Extern, you will have the opportunity to improve your communication, critical thinking, and time-management skills as well as enhance clinical competence. This program builds on the fundamentals of nursing education, theoretical knowledge, awareness of the role of the professional nurse and the understanding of organizational structure and operations within an acute care setting.
Emory University Hospital (GA): Emory Healthcare is currently looking for nursing students who are interested in helping us change the world for the better as Summer Nurse Externs. The program details include: Applicants must be within one year of graduating from an accredited BSN program; Opportunities available at Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University; Externs will work 36 to 40 hours per week for the program and receive a salary; Externs will work with an RN partner in clinical areas, such as acute care med/surg, operating room, ICU, etc.; While working as an extern, participants will attend educational sessions on current practice in nursing specialties.
Fairview Southdale Hospital (MN): Fairview’s Summer Nursing Student Internship program provides an individualized educational experience at all of our Fairview and HealthEast hospitals and medical centers in the Twin Cities. The program is tailored to your nursing career goals. As a nurse intern, you will be mentored one-on-one by registered nurses to gain hands-on nursing experience. Our program provides opportunities to enhance your technical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills in an acute care environment.
Fox Chase Cancer Center (PA): The Nurse Extern Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center is a structured educational and clinical program for nursing students with an interest in oncology nursing. The program is held the summer before the senior year in nursing school. Student nurse externs work full time (36 hours) for eight weeks with registered nurse preceptors in the inpatient clinical setting.
Gwinnett Medical Center (GA): The Nurse Extern Program offers nursing students the opportunity to gain valuable clinical knowledge and skills through temporary summer employment.
Mayo Clinic (AZ, MN): The Summer III Nursing Externship offers a learning opportunity during which nursing students participate in direct patient care. The externship is offered annually and begins in June. Each summer, students from across the U.S. take part in the Summer III Nursing Externship.
NYU Langone Medical Center (NY): The student nurse extern program provides an opportunity for someone between their junior and senior year of nursing school to receive training through clinical experience. In this role, you will perform patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by the professional registered nurse. You will also work closely with the professional registered nurse to determine patient needs, implement care activities, and report patient/family responses. This is achieved under the direct supervision of the registered nurse, with a comprehensive approach to achieving specific outcomes.
Oklahoma Heart Hospital (OK): OHH’s six-week paid Nurse Extern Program is a truly unique, hands-on learning opportunity for nursing students prior to their final year of nursing school. The program offers nursing students the opportunity to perform a variety of nursing treatments in a cardiovascular environment, utilize state-of-the-art technology and practice assessment skills under the direction and supervision of an experienced RN.
OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (IL): Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Intern will provide direct patient care, gain hands-on experience and enhance assessment skills. This program will also assist in the development of organizational and time management skills. While working in a collegial relationship with RNs, the Nurse Intern will gain a better understanding of professional practice. Educational in-services are presented throughout the summer to further supplement the learning process. Summer Nurse Interns will receive a competitive salary. A centralized and unit-based orientation will be provided.
Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System(SC): The Perioperative Nurse Externship is a combination of observational, didactic and hands-on learning experiences developed to provide nursing students exposure to perioperative nursing within the following specialties: Operating room nursing, Preoperative nursing, Postoperative nursing, Endoscopy nursing. Students will focus on the scrub nurse role during a surgical case and assist with direct patient care during surgical procedures. Each student will be assigned RN and surgical technologist preceptors.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (TN): The Nurse Extern Program at St. Jude is an employment opportunity for nursing students interested in pursuing a career in pediatric oncology nursing. Extern roles are valued at St. Jude and give nursing students within a year of graduation the opportunity to acquire valuable skills and knowledge working with experienced nursing staff in a highly specialized pediatric oncology environment.
UMSL/BJC Summer Nurse Externship Program(MO): Nurse externs will work with an assigned nurse mentor at a BJC HealthCare hospital. Accepted Nurse Externs will receive a stipend of $4,400 over the 10 week period. Externs must register for the three-credit hour corresponding seminar course facilitated by UMSL College of Nursing. The seminar will be held each week of the externship on Mondays from 0800 – 1200 beginning Monday, May 18, 2020.
