JOB TITLE: Patient Care Technician
STATUS: PRN, determined upon interview
REPORTS TO: Unit Nurse, Nurse Manager, Sub-Investigator, Principal Investigator, President
DATE: December 1, 2018
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Patient Care Tech (PCT) takes direction from and works closely with the Unit Nurse on shift, under the direction of the Nurse Manager, Sub-Investigator, and Principal Investigator. The PCT observes and interact with patients. The PCT works with the Charge Nurse to oversee the safety and care of patients, while ensuring that protocol specifications are followed. The PCT reports and documents any unusual findings that need professional attention. The PCT participates and assists in patient activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adhere to GCP, ICH, HIPAA, FDA Regulations and Practice Guidelines (PG) and maintain ongoing documentation
- Take direction from Unit Nurse, Nurse Manager, Sub Investigator, and Study Coordinator regarding protocol procedures and limitations
- Assist in patient admission and discharge process
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients and staff
- Train on all inpatient protocols and adhere to procedure schedule
- Perform vital signs and report any out-of-range
- Report patient condition to appropriate personnel during each shift
- Encourage patient hygiene and participation in activities
- Order and serve patient meals and snacks
- Manage smoking breaks/restrictions according to protocol
- Adhere to protocol specifications
- Help patients understand and adhere to unit rules and regulations
- Provide care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights
- Perform all duties on the shift specific Responsibilities Checklist
- Perform other duties as assigned
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Complete 40 hours of on the job training
- Complete GCP requirements within the 1st week of training
- Complete City of Austin Food Handler Certification within the 1st week of training
- Previous experience working with individuals with mental health diagnoses preferred
- CPR Certification preferred but required within the 1st 30 days after hire
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Able to read, analyze and interpret protocol procedure instructions
- Able to effectively communicate patient and trial-related information and respond to questions from Investigators, staff, patients
- Adhere to Good Clinical Practices and the regulations necessary for the protection of human subjects in the conduct of clinical research
- Able to function effectively in a team setting
- Demonstrate consistent professional conduct
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other health care professionals.
- Demonstrate patience and compassion
- Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail
- Must possess keen observation skills
- Exhibit punctuality with work hours as well as timed protocol
