Mike’s Place, a respite program for older adults with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other types of memory loss, also serves as a source of support and rest for caregivers.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday, staff and volunteers at Mike’s Place provide stimulating and enjoyable activities that include musical performances, sing-alongs, exercise, storytelling, board games, bingo, pet therapy, holiday celebrations, a morning snack, and a nutritious lunch. Each Mike’s Place participant is assisted by a dedicated volunteer who serves as a “buddy” and helps him or her participate in fun activities and eat lunch.
Mike’s Place provides caregivers with a much needed break from the often exhausting duties of looking after their care recipient. We also offer classes, support groups, and panel discussions designed to give caregivers the knowledge and emotional tools they need to care for their loved ones.
This program assists people with memory loss issues from all parts of Austin. But by virtue of it being the only respite care center of its kind in East Austin, Mike’s Place is especially essential for caregivers of clients living east of I-35. Because our program is free, it is a practical option for families who have limited incomes and cannot afford the cost of private respite centers.
