Gary D Snook, MD, LLC is looking for a new team member for our medical-legal, expert witness, consulting business. For the expert witness consulting, there is a need for a contract worker to provide administrative services and research work. Starting pay for the contractor is $25 per hour for administrative and office organizational work, with research paid at $40 per hour. This is a part-time position with a self-determined and flexible schedule, and, except for occasional meetings, work is done remotely. We are looking for someone who lives in the general Central Texas area.
In this consulting business, attorneys hire Gary D. Snook, MD, LLC to analyze medical records and write reports or affidavits, and Dr. Snook will also engage in depositions, independent medical examinations, or trial testimony, as the business’ contribution to the attorney’s case preparation for litigation. Administrative work entails coordinating our work product with the attorney’s offices such as monitoring records, deadlines, etc. Work as a researcher entails analyzing medical records and contributing to the report-writing process itself, working directly with Dr. Snook on cases.
Knowledge and experience in the field of medicine or law is helpful, but not required. The administrator/researcher can quickly learn how to work with basic medical and legal documents, but we are looking for someone with well-developed communications skills. We use basic office administrative software, such as MS Word and Excel, and working with PDF files in cloud storage.
Having someone who is honest and caring–a person of integrity–is a must, because we deal with personal health records which are confidential. We follow HIPAA protocols. The candidate also needs strong organizational skills and be self-directed enough to stay constant in maintaining the workflow. Dependability and consistency are essential.
As mentioned, the administrator/researcher is hired as a contractor, using forms W-9 and 1099, meaning the individual is responsible for his or her own taxes and insurance. Some job duties need to be accomplished during the time window of Monday-Friday, 9 AM-5 PM, such as phone communications with attorney offices. If the candidate has another part-time job or other obligations on his/her calendar, that is not an issue, as long as there are consistent windows of time during the standard work week of Monday-Friday, 9 AM-5 PM, to provide opportunities for communications with attorney offices.
Depending on the number of cases that are active, the administrator/researcher work can range from 10 to 25 hours, per week.
For the research for reports, an example is that a case chronology will be written, or the researcher may be asked to go through records to find answers to specific questions such as: Are there similar diagnoses in the medical records before and after the accident? Is this a case of acute injury or degeneration over time—or both? We also will use the hiring attorney’s Bates numbering system, as well as name of the institution record source, to cite where information is found. The researcher can quickly learn the format of the medical review reports, and contribute to writing part of the content, such as records history and analysis. Dr. Snook is interested in the researcher’s observations about a case and often discusses case details, with the medical legal consulting work seen as a team effort in creating the work product.
