The ingenuity of our students and faculty doesn’t stop when the school year ends in May. Artists and scholars from the Department of Theatre and Dance have continued shaping and showcasing their artistry throughout the summer months. We’re excited to highlight some of the ways that our students and faculty have stretched their creative muscles this summer, here in Austin and across the country.
Beyond the Stage
Performance and Belonging in Museum Spaces
For one week in December, eager, participatory shouts of children filled the Art Galleries at Black Studies. Multicolored origami carved a path through the Blanton Museum of Art, while other days, intergenerational conversations reverberated off its atrium walls. Children learned about abstract art, teenage immigrants reflected on belonging and adults reminisced on fond memories, all through performances by Theatre and Dance students. Though their pieces were vastly different, each group of students shared a common goal – making a performance with specific audiences that would help participants share and understand their own stories.
UTeach Student Teachers Learn to Lead with Empathy and Encouragement
As another academic year ends, our 2023 UTeach Theatre graduates finished their college careers as student teachers this past spring. They’ve spent months blocking scenes, assisting with curriculum and encouraging students to be the truest, most creative versions of themselves. Our UTeach grads learned first-hand that teaching is more than just sharing information – teachers serve as support systems and role models for the next generation of creative thinkers, artists and future educators. We spoke with a few of our 2023 UTeach Theatre grads about the lessons they learned in the classroom and the advice that carried them through their months of student teaching.
