(UTNT) UT New Theatre is a showcase of new plays by graduating M.F.A. candidate playwrights. Now in its sixteenth season, UTNT brings together students from all theatre-making disciplines to develop new plays from script to stage. Rebecca Fitton: Justine Gelfman’s sharp, witty and all too timely play, In Sisters We Trust, or My F*cked Up American Girl Doll Play, offers a nuanced critique of institution-branded female empowerment. The story leans first upon nostalgia–the surreal magic of American Girl–before plummeting into the complex dynamics of historical discrimination and erasure as related to race and gender, generational wealth, intersectional feminism and flawed representations of women in media. It is a doozy. The play implicates you, the audience, in its commentary. How are you complicit in age-old oppressive practices glossed over by a shade of millennial pink?

When creating the play Tiny Fingerprints, M.F.A. candidate Jaymes Sanchez wove an urban legend from his hometown of San Antonio, Texas into the framework of his script. In his exploration of grief and belief, Sanchez chose the famous haunted train tracks as a backdrop, testing the limits of his protagonist’s belief in this ghost story. To find out more about the original story and its retelling in cities across Texas, we spoke with Sanchez and a few of his Tiny Fingerprints collaborators about the haunted train tracks ahead of their performance as part of UTNT (UT New Theatre) this spring.
