Studying Abroad: Artmaking and Exploration in Mexico City

At the beginning of the summer, while many students and faculty travelled home for the break or set off on much anticipated vacations, faculty member Roxanne Schroeder-Arce and nine students embarked on a different journey. Together, they travelled to Mexico City for a month-long Maymester course entitled Engaging the Arts as Audience – Mexican Arts and Youth, where they studied the breathtaking artwork of Mexican artists and the impact of arts education on children in Mexico City. We recently sat down with Schroeder-Arce to get an inside look at the program, from mask-making to soaking in the local art scene through various exhibits, performances and rehearsals.

UTeach Theatre Alumni on Navigating a New Educational Landscape

The UTeach Theatre program prides itself on fostering collaborative, creative and adaptive educators who are ready to influence the next generation of artists. With the landscape of educational theatre shifting before them in spring of 2020, the B.F.A. in Theatre Education graduates were armed with these skills, stepping into roles that were not only new to them but also new to the educational world. Not to be deterred, the UTeach Theatre class of 2020 celebrated a 100% job placement rate for students applying at Texas schools, spreading their knowledge to elementary, middle and high schools across the state, with some graduates branching out to campuses across the country. Back in December, we caught up with UTeach Theatre alumni Miranda Perkins and Tori Husting following thier first semester of teaching, discussing their experiences navigating this new educational landscape and their advice for future teachers stepping into these roles.

An Inside Look at the Dance Area’s Virtual Performance Showcase

Each semester, members of the dance area have traditionally come together to present a showcase of student work known as the “Dance Area Performance Showcase” or DAPS. This year, with the shift to online learning amidst shelter-in-place protocols, faculty and students have had to adjust their plans to preserve some semblance of what a normal semester would look like. For our dancers, this included reinventing their DAPS showcase as a YouTube playlist; sharing videos of online classes and experiments as well as virtual performances of their final projects.
