Black Lives Matter (BLM for short) is a social and political movement that originated by three black women, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. BLM became a national movement in response to George Zimmerman, a security officer who fatally shot Travon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old black youth in 2013. Large protests in various cities throughout the country grew in hope that the justice system will rightfully convict police officers who are committing police brutality against unarmed people of color. The purpose of the movement was to bring awareness and demand justice for the lives of black people who were wrongfully shot and killed by police officers. In efforts to end racial inequality and white supremacy, BLM seeks to end systemic racism, gun violence, and police brutality against African Americans. 2020 sparked the largest protest of BLM after the death of George Floyd by four officers, Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng, and Tou Thao. George Floyd was held to the ground for over 8 minutes with Derek Chauvin’s knee pressed into Floyd’s back which impeded his ability to breathe and led to his death. The entire occurrence was recorded by 17-year-old Danielle Fraiser. The video evidence of George Floyd’s senseless death led to a worldwide movement demanding the indictment and prosecution of all officers responsible for his death. Mass amounts of people filled streets, blocked highways, and marched demanding justice chanting “I CAN’T BREATHE,” “NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE,” and “SAY HIS NAME; SAY HER NAME.” 2020 was an emotional year with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a worldwide movement of BLM. In the play we see how both of these pandemics impact the lives of Kemi and her family.
