Professor Emeritus March began his career as an award-winning middle school teacher in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan. He taught graduate and undergraduate courses in music education for 31 years and was the graduate advisor for 17 years at the Butler School of Music. He is also author of three music textbooks published by Silver Burdett Ginn widely used throughout the United States. He has held leadership roles in the Music Educators National Conference, the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Alliance for Arts Education. He presented workshops for teachers in the U.S. and Europe. March was recognized as the statewide Music Teacher of the Year in Michigan and has received The University of Texas at Austin’s College of Fine Arts Teaching Excellence Award. The University of Texas System established the Hunter C. March Scholarship in Fine Arts Teacher Education in May 2016 to honor his legacy.
“Hunter March has made an extraordinary, lasting contribution to arts education in Texas over his last decade as head of the UTeach Fine Arts program, UT’s Fine Arts teacher education program,” said College of Fine Arts Dean Doug Dempster. “Working with departmental leadership, faculty, staff and students, his efforts have nearly doubled enrollments in the college’s Fine Arts teacher education programs in a period when teacher education programs have seen declining enrollments across the country. He’s built bridges across arts disciplines and created a cohesive, enthusiastic community of faculty and student arts educators in our college. With his strong focus on promoting arts integration and placing student teachers in underserved schools, Hunter’s good work has expanded equitable access to high quality arts education across the state of Texas. He has rejuvenated the College of Fine Arts legacy as the leading fine arts teacher education program in the state.”
