OUR MISSION
The Galaxy Evolution Vertically Integrated Projects (GEVIP) Program is an immersive, multi-year research program, modeled after the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) program at Georgia Tech. GEVIP brings together students from across astronomy, physics or related fields to perform research into galaxy evolution, all while earning course credit. Students have multiple mentoring contact points, including the PI and multiple postdocs and graduate students, as well as more senior undergraduates.
Students apply during the fall semester of their sophomore year, joining in the spring. They first work through a variety of training modules on astronomical data analysis with Python, all while reading a variety of papers to help develop their scientific interests. By the end of the fall semester of their junior year, they develop and write a proposal for a “capstone” project, which they complete over their final three semesters using state-of-the-art datasets available in our research group, primarily with the James Webb Space Telescope. Contrary to a typical course-based research class, these are novel research projects, which the students conceive themselves. VIP students fully experience what it means to be a scientist, improving their scientific maturity and helping them more fully form their future career goals.
