Center for Politics and Governance/LBJ School Needs Leadership Academy Counselors

The Center for Politics and Governance at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the UT Texas Exes Alumni Association are looking for 20 responsible counselors to inspire high school students during a summer leadership academy on the UT-Austin Campus from July 18 through July 21.

Counselors will reside with students in the Jester Residency Hall for the length of the academy and serve as guides, mentors, chaperones, and friends.  Responsibilities will include accompanying the academy participants to educational  events and academy functions, as well as work with them in small group sessions on policy issues.  Counselors earn $500 for the four days the program.  An orientation is scheduled for July 17th on the UT-Austin Campus.

The Subiendo Academy
Subiendo will bring to the University outstanding students who have completed their junior year of high school.  These students will participate over a four-day (three-night) period in intensive leadership training and community building exercises.  The program will feature nationally prominent speakers, simulation exercises, and classroom training.  Student cohorts will analyze policy issues affecting the Hispanic community and present solutions in a plenary session.  Students will also participate in additional activities, including a visit to the state capitol, a meeting with business leaders, and recreational networking and team-building exercises.

For the summer 2010 academy, application is open to Central Texas high school students, regardless of race or ethnicity, who have completed their junior year by July 1, 2010.  Students must complete an application and essay on challenges facing the State of Texas.  (High schools in Central Texas have been contacted to invite their students to apply.  The goal is to expand the program in future years to include students statewide.)

The academy is free for participating students, who will stay in the University’s Jester Center for the duration of the program.

K12 Social Studies Editorial

Responsibilities:

  • Support editorial teams with photo and art research, proofing pages against foul, previewing video segments from HISTORY (formerly the History Channel), etc. for the development of 2012 copyright update programs—three (3) middle school and (4) high school programs
  • Focus on replacing photos and art, ensuring that appropriate captions are in place for new photos/art, and matching the HISTORY assets in appropriate sections of our components
  • Attend photo research meetings, status meetings, etc., to develop an understanding of the various processes of editorial work

Requirements:

  • Current college sophomore or junior status required
  • Interest in Social Studies preferred
  • Must be able to work June through Mid-August; max of 200 hours

Compensation:

$12-15/hr
