Library Page(Student Assistant) Position at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History

The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin is a special collections library, archive, and museum that facilitates research and sponsors programs on the historical development of the United States. The Center supports research and education by acquiring, preserving, and making accessible research collections and by sponsoring exhibitions, conferences, symposia, oral history projects, publications, fellowships, and grant-funded initiatives.

DESCRIPTION: Student assistants needed for work in a closed stacks, secure library and archives environment. Duties include retrieving and shelving materials in a wide variety of formats; circulation of materials stored offsite; maintaining vertical files articles; filing; data entry; special archival and library projects and other duties as assigned. Hours vary between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00, Monday through Friday; and occasional Saturdays from 8:00 to 2:00.  Position can start the week of July 19, 2010.

Required: Current UT student status.  Enrolled for at least 6 credit hours. (Students who completed the spring semester and who are enrolled for the fall semester are eligible even if not currently in summer school.) Reliability. Appropriate dress. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; to climb multiple flights of stairs; to work well under supervision and with others. Ability to use good judgment and follow through independently within the boundaries of one’s own authority.

Preferred: Experience shelving books cataloged in Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress classifications, Knowledge of Texas and United States History.  Public service experience in special collections library, research center or archive.
