SUBMIT TO ECHO BY MARCH 20

Been working on a short story or poem? Been taking some photographs?

Submit them to ECHO for the chance to be published in our 2013 Issue. We are doing our best to make this ECHO the best one yet, but the most important part is the content, and for that we need you! Our theme for the issue is “Flux,” but keep in mind that is a loose guideline.

So finish that story, finish that poem, finish those pictures, and submit them to ECHO by March 20.

You can submit your work by emailing echolitmag@gmail.com.

Apply for the Humanities Honors Major!!

Want to design your own interdisciplinary honors major? With Humanities, you can put together a major that reflects your specific research interests.  Topics encompass much more than traditional Humanities fields, like the fine arts and literature.  Current Humanities majors are completing contracts in Women’s Health in the Middle East, Language and Social Change, Human Rights in the Francophone World, and Game Theory,  among many others.

Humanities is a small community of students that will receive individualized advising from the Humanities adviser (Linda).  Humanities is a major by application only. There are not any specific application deadlines, but now is an excellent time to come speak to me about your interests and start building your Humanities contract.

Please call the LAH office at 471-3458 to make an appointment.

LinkedIn Photographs

Liberal Arts Career Services has a  setup to take photographs for your LinkedIn profiles. They recommend that you come dressed in business casual or professional, and they will take a headshot picture in front of their photo backdrop to send it to you. That way you have a professional-looking photograph that isn’t cropped from another picture. If anyone is interested, they are happy to help! They also have materials and coaches who can help with building a great profile and how to use LinkedIn.

Harry Ransom Center Internships

The Liberal Arts Honors Program offers an internship at the Harry Ransom Center (http://www.hrc.utexas.edu) that is designed to provide a current LAH student with experience in the nature and operation of a major humanities research center. The experience gained by interns will benefit them in their own research projects, in possible graduate studies, and even as a career option in such fields as librarianship, museum studies, archival or curatorial work, as well as public affairs, marketing, public programming and event management.

Once selected, interns will choose from a variety of opportunities within the center. These vary from year to year, but will likely include:

  • processing collections
  • preserving collection materials
  • planning exhibitions
  • doing editorial and publicity work
  • working on website enhancement projects
  • marketing and public affairs

The internship will be for the entire academic year (fall and spring semester). Interns are asked to commit to a particular department for at least one full semester. Most interns work in a single department the entire year, but some choose to change at semester break. Internships run for three months in the fall: September, October, and November; and three in the spring: February, March, and April.  Thus, the internship will end each semester before finals begin.

The position is not a benefits-eligible one, but there is a stipend of $1500 per semester, for which the intern is expected to put in a 10-hour work week. The student must be registered for a minimum of six hours of coursework. In addition there is the possibility of academic credit if the student registers for a conference course (either TC or English) with an appropriate supervising professor.

Applying

An applicant should provide the following:

  • a one-page resumé,
  • a letter from the student describing his/her interest and qualifications,
  • a letter of recommendation from a UT faculty member or someone who knows the candidate’s professional qualification pertinent to this internship

Both letters should be addressed to Danielle Sigler, Curator of Academic Affairs, but should be attached to the resumé and delivered to the LAH office.

Deadline for applications is April 1, 2013.
