About MAMA

The MAMA study aims to examine changes in the pancreas that occur during pregnancy, in both pregnant mothers and their babies, and find out how they are affected by diabetes.

Previous research has shown that people with diabetes tend to have smaller pancreas size compared to people without diabetes. Previous research has also shown that the pancreas grows in size during a healthy pregnancy.

Through the MAMA study, the researchers aim to examine the dynamics of pancreas size fluctuations in pregnant, diabetic individuals. The researchers also aim to determine typical fetal pancreatic development.

The information learned in this research may help illustrate what happens to the pancreases of mothers and their babies during pregnancy, in people who have gestational and pregestational diabetes. In the future, the findings of this study may be used to make improvements in diabetes screening and therapeutic monitoring.
