Ice, Sediment and Earth’s History 

A collaboration with the TERMINUS scientists Benjamin Keisling and Ginny Catania, UTIG, UT Austin. Bridging a scientific exploration of Greenland’s past with an immersive multimedia content providing an entry point into the curiosities and complexities of our changing planet, TACC’s Visualization Lab displays a series of intertwining content from the collaboration on the Lab’s large monitor display. Over the past 100 years, we have been revising our understanding of the Greenland ice sheet from a fixed frozen block of ice to that of a dynamic viscous entity, with arteries of fast-flowing ice that carve deep valleys in the underlying bedrock that emerge as fjords into the ocean. These carry enormous volumes of sediment, fresh water and nutrients out to the ocean, building and bulldozing an ever-changing landscape.
