Ocean, Sea Ice and Air Interactions

E3SM-Arctic is a configuration of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model designed for studying the Arctic climate system. Configured on a global domain, it has regionally refined high resolution grids in the Arctic in all its components. This allows for an accurate representation of fine-scale transport processes that are important for the Arctic; for instance, narrow currents and eddies that carry warm Atlantic waters into the Arctic through the Barents Sea and Fram Strait, and Arctic cyclones that transport warm and moist air into the Arctic. This work was supported by the Regional and Global Model Analysis (RGMA) program area of the US Department of Energy’s Office of Science as a contribution to the HiLAT-RASM and the Modeling Arctic Storms and Impacts of Diminishing Sea Ice projects.
