Alumna Rose Salseda appointed to Art History faculty at Stanford

Rose G. Salseda (Ph.D. in Art History, 2018; MA in Art History, 2009) has been appointed acting assistant professor at Stanford University’s Art & Art History department. She is a recipient of the 2018-20 New York University Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, but has declined the offer to accept the position at Stanford University. In fall 2019, she will begin the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the same department. During her academic career at the University of Texas at Austin, Salseda has worked as a cultural producer, curator, researcher and the associate director of the U.S. Latinx Art Forum, an advocacy organization dedicated to expanding and enhancing the visibility of Latinx art. As recently as 2017, Salseda was awarded the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship.

Her doctoral research explores two generations of artists who have made work in response to the civil uprising, the police beating of Rodney King, and other related episodes of violence. While scholars have examined the videotaped beating of King and documentation of the unrest, few have focused on the potential of visual art to speak to the history. Salseda’s dissertation, “The Visual Art Legacy of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots,” explores, among others, the works of artists Juan Capistrán and Ricky Yanas, two artists whose work Salseda curated in the 2014 exhibition Historical Present at the Blanton Museum of Art.
