Pinto Carver Essay Contest Open to All LAHers! Due January 14 (First Day of Classes)

The Pinto Carver Essay Contest – 2013

Style, in its finest sense, is the last acquirement

of the educated mind; it is also the most useful.

It pervades the whole being.  The administrator

with a sense of style hates waste; the engineer

with a sense for style economizes his material;

the artisan with a sense for style prefers good

work.  Style is the ultimate morality of mind.

-Alfred North Whitehead

The Topic:

Campaign LAH:  The Pursuit of Excellence is seeking to raise 1.5 million dollars to help fund scholarships and research, internship, and study aboard opportunities for Liberal Arts Honors students.  Many donors want to know what LAH is and what is its “brand.”  Write an essay in which you describe what you believe LAH to be and also, in six to ten words craft a “brand.”  The University’s “What Starts Here Changes the World” is one such successful brand, “Don’t Mess With Texas” another.  Needless to say, the more well developed your thoughts, the more specific your language, the better.  And for this Campaign to succeed, we need your best thoughts.

Eligibility:  Current Liberal Arts Honors students

Specifications: 750-1000 words, titled, double-spaced, and typed, with your name in the upper-right hand corner.  No cover page.

Awards:

1st Prize: $1500

2nd Prize: $500

3rd Prize: $250

Submission Deadline:  Monday, January 14, 5:00 p.m. in the NEW Liberal Arts Honors Office (CLA 2.500)  The judges reserve the right to withhold awards in the absence of prize worthy essays.

Humanity in Action

A note from Dr. Carver:

Ryan Gayman, a Senior Fellow with Humanity In Action (see below) will be on campus on Monday, December 17 and would very much like to talk with students about the Humanity In Action Fellowship.  He will be available on that Monday, 2:00 to 3:00 pm in the Conference Room, Fourth Floor of Gebauer, for a group meeting, and he will be happy to meet with individual students after that, 3:00 to 5:00 pm.  This is a terrific program, and I hope many of you will be interested in applying, if not this year, then next.  Note well:  the deadline for the 2013 application is January 10th.

Humanity in Action is now accepting applications for its international human rights fellowship programs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lyon and Warsaw.
The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of students to study human rights and to produce research exploring how and why individuals and societies resist intolerance and stand up for democratic values.  Humanity in Action invites applications from talented college students and recent graduates who are intellectually gifted, mature, independent and passionate about human rights and social justice.  Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors and graduates from the undergraduate classes of 2011 and 2012 are eligible to apply.

The fellowship will begin in Washington, DC on May 27, 2013 at the Council on Foreign Relations and subsequently take place in Europe from June 1 to June 30, 2013.  Humanity in Action covers all costs associated with participation.   The application deadline is January 10, 2013.  Learn more at www.humanityinaction.org/apply.
