File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 15 if you need financial aid for academic year 2013-14.
March 15 is the FAFSA priority filing deadline. The State of Texas gives priority consideration for its financial aid programs to otherwise eligible students who file FAFSAs by this date. Also, filing FAFSAs by March 15 puts students in a position to receive the most favorable financial aid packages possible, because it ensures our ability to consider for need-based university grants, which are limited.
The Office of Student Financial Services Students provides various forms of assistance to students completing the FAFSA. These include on-campus FAFSA completion seminars through March 14 and an on-line tutorial, 7 Easy Steps to the FAFSA.
The Liberal Arts Council, the official student voice of Liberal Arts students at the University of Texas at Austin, has pledged efforts for the Spring 2013 semester to raise money for a local Austin charity. The charity we have chosen is Casa Marianella, an emergency shelter for recent adult immigrants to the United States. Casa provides housing and food for up to 35 immigrants, English classes, and a shelter for women and children escaping violent situations, among others. This charity is very worthy and in need of your support so that the Austin area may provide more support for recent immigrants, helping them access recourses and education. The Student Conduct Advisory Committee (SCAC) is seeking students across campus that are genuinely committed to ensuring that the student body lives by the principles espoused in the University’s Honor Code. SCAC works with the Student Judicial Services to provide a student perspective on issues of academic and conduct integrity. Summer 2013 Undergraduate Internships
During the summer of 2013, the Center will support six undergraduate interns. These 14-hour-per-week positions will provide undergraduates with experience in the nature and operations of a major humanities research center. Students will be paid hourly and receive approximately $1,500 for the summer, contingent on hours actually worked. The Creekmore and Adele Fath Charitable Foundation has provided generous funding for these internships. The Texas Undergraduate Law Review is now accepting articles for the second edition that will be published in June. Any undergraduate student attending the University of Texas at Austin is welcome to submit an article, and being published in a journal looks great on a law school application! We require that the submission be from 6 to 12 pages, double-spaced, size 12 font, without graphic materials. You are welcome to use any term papers or portions of your thesis that is related to legal issues. If you are looking for examples, feel free to check out the TULR Monthly that is posted in texasulr.org or Columbia’s ULR –> http://blogs.cuit.columbia.edu/culr/files/2012/12/CULR-Fall-2012-Body.pdf. The due date will be April 21st at 11:59 for first drafts. Please submit your article to texasulr@gmail.com by that time. Any questions can be emailed to texasulr@gmail.com as well.
The Junior Fellows Program was begun in 1959 by Harry Ransom as a means of encouraging academic excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences. At that time it was essentially an honor society to which students were elected at the end of their freshman year. Over the years, the Junior Fellows has evolved into a society of juniors and seniors from the University at large who are engaged in independent research projects under the direction of members of the faculty.
Fellows are required to attend meetings of the group, held every other week in both the fall and spring semesters. Besides project presentations, meetings feature discussions led by eminent scholars from on and off campus. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in field trips, seminars, and other academic activities. It is possible to earn academic credit for work done as a Junior Fellow, by enrolling in the appropriate conference course with the supervising professor. For example, Humanities and Plan II majors usually use their senior theses as their Junior Fellows projects. Students pursuing Special Honors in their major use the honors thesis number. Other non-honors courses are also available, for example ARH 376, E 367C, CH 475K, RTF 336. Fellows should register for the course that is approved by their advisers, fits into their degree plans, and has the right format for the chosen topic. Funds are available to assist Fellows with expenses involved in their research. There is also money available for Fellows who can demonstrate financial need.
Application is open to any qualified student from any program on campus who will have completed 60 hours prior to the Fall semester. Junior Fellows normally have a GPA of at least 3.75, but outstanding students whose abilities are manifested in other ways should not hesitate to apply. Although administered by the College of Liberal Arts, the program is open to all qualified students on campus. Many students from outside Liberal Arts are presently members.
