LAH Creative Writing Prize

Echo Literary and Arts Magazine is teaming up with Liberal Arts Honors to offer the Second Annual LAH Creative Writing Prize open to current LAH undergraduates. Echo will accept prose submissions no longer than 10 pages double spaced. When submitting, please put “LAH CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST” as the email subject line. Stories submitted for the prize will automatically be considered for publication!

We are also accepting submissions for poetry, photography, and visual art for our regular submissions.

The deadline for all submissions, including the writing contest, is Jan. 19!

Novelist Paul Lisicky in Joynes Reading Room

On Thursday, December 6th at 7 p.m., the Joynes Reading Room will co-host a reading by novelist and memoirist Paul Lisicky. Paul Lisicky is the New Writers Project’s Fall 2018 Visiting Writer and the author of The Narrow Door (a New York Times Editors’ Choice), Unbuilt ProjectsThe Burning HouseFamous Builder, and Lawnboy. His work has appeared in The AtlanticBuzzFeedConjunctionsFence, The New York TimesPloughsharesTin House, and in many other magazines and anthologies. A 2016 Guggenheim Fellow, he has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the James Michener/Copernicus Society, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, where he has served on the Writing Committee since 2000. The Joynes Room has a few copies of Unbuilt Projects, which we will give away (for free) to honors students who plan to attend the event—interested students should inquire in person at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room (CRD 007). Liberator Magazine Book Club

The Liberator Magazine is excited to host their second Book Club (sort of), an event dedicated to meaningful discussion, delicious pastries, and relaxation. This month’s topic is modern romance. How has the digital age changed the way we form relationships? How have contemporary trends changed the way view romance?

Book Club will take place in the Dies Center of Patton Hall (RLP) on Thursday, November 15th from 7-8pm.

LAH Diversity Action Committee Diverse Voices Event

Please join LAH and the LAH Diversity Action Committee for our next Diverse Voices event featuring Dr. Karma Chávez on Thursday, November 15th at 12:30 PM in SAC 3.116.

Dr. Chávez is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies and affiliate in the Department of Communication Studies, the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, the Center for Mexican American Studies, the LGBTQ Studies Program, and the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Texas – Austin. Dr. Chávez’s presentation “#Abolish ICE, Migrant Caravans, and the State of Immigrant Rights Struggles in the US,” will highlight her work as a scholar and activist.

University Writing Center Workshop

Please join us for our second writing workshop of the semester on Thursday, November 8th at 4 PM – 5PM in the LAH Commons. Experts from the University Writing Center will walk us through the writing process. Students will learn how to read and respond to different types of writing prompts, outline an essay, and revise. These crucial skills that will help you at UT-Austin and beyond.

Paid Undergraduate Research Fellows – Deadline Extended

The deadline for applications for Undergraduate Research Fellows in LAH 112: The Nature of Inquiry in Spring 2019 to Thursday, November 8thThe course will meet Wednesdays 2-3pm. Fellows will work with the Associate Director, Dr. Pikus, and her graduate assistant, Christina Villarreal, in the development of assignments, rubrics and activities for the course. In addition, fellows will be responsible for scoring and providing feedback on approximately seven assignments and will meet individually with their assigned group of 12-15 students. Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria: 1) completed a research methods course by the beginning of Spring 2019; 2) conducted independent research under the supervision of a faculty or staff member; 3) worked on a faculty-led research project; or 4) be currently working on a honors thesis. The fellows will be paid $750 over the course of the semester for their work in the course. In addition, in recognition of their outstanding academic and research accomplishments, fellows will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Please note that undergraduates who will be working for LAH in Spring 2019 in another capacity are ineligible for this position. Interested students should submit their resume, a short letter of interest (maximum of 500 words), and a list of two references to Dr. Pikus atmpikus@austin.utexas.edu by Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Volunteer at the Harry Ransom Center

The Harry Ransom Center is currently seeking volunteers to work with the public at the visitor desk, at special events, and as docents from January through December 2018. Descriptions of the positions are online at www.hrc.utexas.edu/about/participate/volunteer/ 

These public outreach volunteers ensure all visitors have a positive and enjoyable experience at the Ransom Center, and they also gain a behind-the-scenes perspective into a world-renowned humanities research library and museum. 

We encourage applications from any individual (student, staff, graduate student, community member) with strong communication and customer service skills, who listens well and is comfortable interacting with the public. We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing these volunteer opportunities with anyone who may be interested. Applications are due December 1, 2018.
