University Writing Center Workshop

Please join us for our second writing workshop of the semester on Thursday, November 8th at 4 PM – 5PM in the LAH Commons. Experts from the University Writing Center will walk us through the writing process. Students will learn how to read and respond to different types of writing prompts, outline an essay, and revise. These crucial skills that will help you at UT-Austin and beyond.

Paid Undergraduate Research Fellows – Deadline Extended

The deadline for applications for Undergraduate Research Fellows in LAH 112: The Nature of Inquiry in Spring 2019 to Thursday, November 8thThe course will meet Wednesdays 2-3pm. Fellows will work with the Associate Director, Dr. Pikus, and her graduate assistant, Christina Villarreal, in the development of assignments, rubrics and activities for the course. In addition, fellows will be responsible for scoring and providing feedback on approximately seven assignments and will meet individually with their assigned group of 12-15 students. Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria: 1) completed a research methods course by the beginning of Spring 2019; 2) conducted independent research under the supervision of a faculty or staff member; 3) worked on a faculty-led research project; or 4) be currently working on a honors thesis. The fellows will be paid $750 over the course of the semester for their work in the course. In addition, in recognition of their outstanding academic and research accomplishments, fellows will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Please note that undergraduates who will be working for LAH in Spring 2019 in another capacity are ineligible for this position. Interested students should submit their resume, a short letter of interest (maximum of 500 words), and a list of two references to Dr. Pikus atmpikus@austin.utexas.edu by Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Volunteer at the Harry Ransom Center

The Harry Ransom Center is currently seeking volunteers to work with the public at the visitor desk, at special events, and as docents from January through December 2018. Descriptions of the positions are online at www.hrc.utexas.edu/about/participate/volunteer/ 

These public outreach volunteers ensure all visitors have a positive and enjoyable experience at the Ransom Center, and they also gain a behind-the-scenes perspective into a world-renowned humanities research library and museum. 

We encourage applications from any individual (student, staff, graduate student, community member) with strong communication and customer service skills, who listens well and is comfortable interacting with the public. We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing these volunteer opportunities with anyone who may be interested. Applications are due December 1, 2018.
