How to Enroll in Major-Restricted Courses Design The Department of Design does not generally hold seats for non-majors, however, will be offering a select number of reserved seats in the Fall 2026 semester. These are a group of intro level courses with open seats set aside that non-majors should be able to register in without restriction at any point during the registration cycle. Once those seats are filled, non-majors will be placed on the University waitlist as usual and may be admitted between the 1st and 5th class days if space becomes available. • DES 301: Intro to Design Thinking – John Freach (22805) • DES 304: Design 1 – Kelcey Gray (22810) • DES 304: Design 1 – Carley Law (22815) • DES 305: Design 2 – Jose Perez (22820) • DES 306: Design 3 – Cat Ploehn (22825) • DES 310T: Intro to Prototyping – Henry Smith (22840) In some cases, courses may be open to non-majors but will not reserve seats at the start of registration. Non-majors will join the University waitlist as usual and may be admitted between the 1st and 5th class days if/when space becomes available. Some courses with potential non-major seats include: • DES 337.1: History of Graphic Design – Carma Gorman (22925) • DES 323: Color in Theory and Practice – Carma Gorman (22860) • DES 330T: Experimental Wearable Design – Vivan Ye (22890) • DES 330T: Space Matters – Tamie Glass (22900) • DES 347: Publication Studio – Kevin Auer* (22935) *Please contact Kevin at deslab2@gmail.com about availability/enrollment processes Certain Design courses are also cross listed with the Center for Integrated Design (ITD). These cross listed courses are open to students of all majors on a first-come, first-serve basis. • ITD 307C: Everyday Design – Gray Garmon (23110) • ITD 330T: Play Design Lab – Keila Perez (23120) • ITD 350: Collab Lab: Designing in Teams – Kate Canales (23145) Arts and Entertainment Technologies The Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies reserves 2 seats for non-majors in most classes. To request enrollment, submit a non-major form and include a screenshot of the instructor’s permission to enroll. Please note that permission does not guarantee a seat. Forms are processed every few days in the order they are received. If a reserved seat is available, an enrollment offer will be sent; if not, the requester will be placed on an internally managed waitlist. Between the 1st and 5th class days, all students on the waitlist will be contacted and informed whether a seat is available. Students who receive an offer will have until the 6th class day to add the course, following the normal registration process. There is no longer a “late add” period during the 7th-12th class days. After the 5th class day, no requests will be processed, and the form will not be checked in order to allow 24 hours for students to complete registration.
