November 1, 2019, Filed Under: Student LifeNew Multi-Purpose Arena and Red River Street Realignment Projects Site preparation work to support the new multi-purpose arena will begin on Monday, November 4. This will be done in conjunction with a separate project to realign Red River Street from the 1800 block to East Dean Keeton Street. When both projects are completed, this new alignment of Red River will become a City of Austin roadway with single northbound and southbound lanes, a center turn lane, bicycle paths and sidewalks. For a brief overview, visit the Capital Planning and Construction web page for these projects. Starting November 4, the campus community can expect these travel, parking and pedestrian pathway changes on Red River from Clyde Littlefield Drive to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (MLK): Red River will be reduced to two lanes, allowing two-way traffic. Parking on Red River will be closed from Clyde Littlefield to MLK. Alternative sidewalk routes will be indicated by detour signage. A temporary protected pedestrian walkway will be maintained on the southbound frontage road of IH-35 from Clyde Littlefield to MLK. The following changes will take place on Robert Dedman Drive: A portion of Robert Dedman south of Lot 70 will be reduced to two lanes, allowing two-way traffic. The Child Care Center and Texas Swim Center will be accessed from Robert Dedman only. Starting November 4 thru November 8, 2019, the contractor will be constructing a temporary driveway at Mail & Copy Services. Starting Nov 11, 2019, these changes will take place within 20th Street: The street will be closed to all vehicle traffic. The north pedestrian sidewalk will remain open to through pedestrian traffic. Access to and exit from the Print Shop will be from San Jacinto. Alternative routes for cyclists will be indicated with signage. Bicyclists are encouraged to refer to the City of Austin Bike Map. Parking impacts at north Lot 80 have been in place since the end of September 2019. We will provide an update by email regarding any changes the campus can expect next month, and periodic updates will follow. The Construction Advisory web site will be an ongoing resource for information as work moves forward. Signage will be installed at key locations to assist with wayfinding. Due to the fluid nature of construction, the information in this advisory email is subject to change, but we will do our best to provide timely communication if changes are necessary.
