Openings for the RN I position may be available on Adult, Children or Specialty Units at Austin State Hospital. The RN I performs entry level nursing work at Austin State Hospital on a specified shift at the advanced beginner level. Works under the clinical supervision of more experienced Registered Nurses (RN II/III/IV) and provides basic level nursing care to an assigned group of patients. Assists more experienced nurses in assessing patients nursing care needs. Observes, assesses, plans, performs, evaluates, and documents patient care. Contributes observations to senior nurses and other treatment team members to assist in planning for the patients’ care. Acknowledges, transcribes, and reviews physician orders. Administers medications and basic treatments as ordered and alerts senior nurse of any discrepancies. Promotes, establishes, and maintains the therapeutic milieu. Performs one to one interactions with patients in order to assess their needs and may assist others in providing group interventions, Assists in teaching and directs the implementation of nursing care by non-professional staff. Provides clinical supervision to Licensed Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. May relieve as charge nurse or act as supervisor in his/her absence. Must understand that duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to changes as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Must understand that duties may include exposure of blood or other potentially infectious materials.
