Openings for the RN I position may be available on Adult, Children or Specialty Units at Austin State Hospital.
The RN I performs entry level nursing work at Austin State Hospital on a specified shift at the advanced beginner level. Works under the clinical supervision of more experienced Registered Nurses (RN II/III/IV) and provides basic level nursing care to an assigned group of patients. Assists more experienced nurses in assessing patients nursing care needs.
- Observes, assesses, plans, performs, evaluates, and documents patient care.
- Contributes observations to senior nurses and other treatment team members to assist in planning for the patients’ care.
- Acknowledges, transcribes, and reviews physician orders.
- Administers medications and basic treatments as ordered and alerts senior nurse of any discrepancies.
- Promotes, establishes, and maintains the therapeutic milieu.
- Performs one to one interactions with patients in order to assess their needs and may assist others in providing group interventions,
- Assists in teaching and directs the implementation of nursing care by non-professional staff.
- Provides clinical supervision to Licensed Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Nursing Assistants.
- Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
- May relieve as charge nurse or act as supervisor in his/her absence.
- Must understand that duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to changes as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital.
- Must understand that duties may include exposure of blood or other potentially infectious materials.
