Student teaching is an integral part of UTeach Fine Arts. It provides a culminating experience sufficiently rich and deep in the expectations, processes and rewards of teaching. Explore many opportunities to refine your skills. It can be the most challenging, rewarding and inspiring undertaking in your professional development as a teacher.
You will explore the profession with a variety of intensive field experiences in classroom and community settings to gain experience in theory and practice before student teaching. Students spend between 80 and 180 hours in a variety of field experiences. Implement the ideas and practices from your field experiences to discover the best teaching situation for you.
If you are interested in certification contact the Advising Office in the corresponding departments for details and applying for admission to the Professional Development Sequence, supervised by the Field Experiences Office in the College of Education, in preparation for student teaching within your program. The program emphasizes a comprehensive approach that supports state and national student learning standards and teaching performance standards in the fine arts. Creative and critical thinking are stressed.
Student teaching takes place in K-12 arts classrooms during the final semester of coursework. UTeach partners with many Texas school districts in order to place our student teachers with exemplary mentors statewide. The College created the Fine Arts Student Teaching Travel Grants (FASTT) with the support of generous donors to enable students to complete their requirements in diverse settings. Ask your advisor for qualifications and application information.
