Two free events for honors students

April 12: Panel of Distinguished Photographers

Three outstanding photographers will show slides of their work and discuss the technical, aesthetic, and ethical issues a photographer must consider when photographing people, whether in Afghanistan or in one’s own backyard. Our panelists are Louie PaluLarry Towell and Sarah Wilson, all of whom have won major awards, exhibited their work internationally, and published in major newspapers and magazines. A reception will begin at 6 p.m., with slide presentations and discussion starting at 7 p.m., in the Joynes Reading Room CRD 007. Call 512-471-5787 for more info.

April 16: New Yorker staff writer D.T. Max on David Foster Wallace

Though he was only 46 when he died, David Foster Wallace left an enormous legacy of literature, including three novels (one published posthumously), three collections of short stories, and eight works of nonfiction, including dozens of essays. In a series of articles in The New Yorker, D.T. Max wrote in depth about Wallace’s life and work. Now, following extensive research in the David Foster Wallace archive at UT’s Harry Ransom Center, Max has published a fascinating biography of the author, entitled Every Love Story is a Ghost Story: A Life of David Foster Wallace. D.T. Max will discuss the late author, as well as his own research process in writing the biography. Event starts at 7 p.m. in the Joynes Reading Room, CRD 007. Call 512-471-5787 for more info. There are a limited number of copies of the book available for free on a first-come basis to honors students who plan to attend the event. Inquire in person at the front desk of the Joynes Reading Room.
