White Rose Society: Social Movement Symposium

White Rose Society, a human rights organization, is holding a lecture series on student engagement in social movements. Come & join us!

Speakers include:

On April 14th, Clemantine Wamariya, Rwandan genocide survivor and human rights activist, will be speaking in the Chicano Culture Room, Texas Union 4.206 at 6 pm.

On April 15th, a panel of speakers will discuss their experiences bringing academic and social change to the university, what students have done to contribute to these efforts, and how students could continue this legacy in the future. The panel will occur in the Lone Star Room, Texas Union 3.208 at 6 pm with the following panelists:

Dr. Shannon Speed – Anthropology professor and founder of Native American and Indigenous Studies -The University of Texas at Austin

Dr. Speed will inform us about the progress of the Native American and Indigenous Studies program on campus and the ways students have used their classroom experiences to advocate for and interact with local indigenous tribes.

Ana Ixchel Rosal – Director of the Gender and Sexuality Center at the University of Texas Austin

Ana “Ixchel” Rosal will be talking about the breakthroughs LGBTQ student organizations have made in the university community and the state of Texas in making these environments friendlier for all Longhorns and Texans. She will also speak on the role of the GSC in making these changes happen.

Dr. Leonard Moore – History professor

Dr. Moore will discuss the history of minorities, especially African-Americans, at UT, including court cases the university has faced regarding admissions, student initiatives against segregation during the earlier years of the university’s existence, and more.

On April 21st, Hari Kondabolu, political and social comedian, will be speaking in the Black Box Theater, SAC 2.304 at 6 pm.

WriteLab Summer Internship

LAH Alum William Hausle has an internship available with his company Write Lab in California this summer.

The internship would be paid (~$12.50/hr), though interns would be responsible for their travel and living expenses. We’re prepared to offer a full-time internship for the entire summer, but are flexible if someone would like to work fewer hours a week and leave time for classes or another job/internship. We are looking for a writer to join our content

team, beginning as early as April, with the prospect of a paid internship over the summer. We are looking for someone who writes well under the pressure of deadlines, who is comfortable with intellectual sprints, and who can create quality prose ranging from

website copy to educational material about writing.

Our offices are conveniently located within walking

distance of UC Berkeley’s campus and the Downtown Berkeley BART Station.

Responsibilities

  • Draft instructional material for the WriteLab website and software
  • Draft and revise original contributions to the User’s Guide accompanying the software
  • Assist in aligning site content with our pedagogical principles
  • Test and edit WriteLab’s editorial suggestions

Requirements

  • Ability to write clearly and efficiently
  • Willingness to work with other writers and editors in a team environment

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program promotes personal growth, cultural exchange, community engagement, and mutual understanding by funding nine months abroad to study, research or teach English in countries around the world.

If your students aren’t quite ready, the competition happens every year, and we’d like to put the Fulbright Program in exceptional students’ minds as a goal to strive for after graduation!

The Fine Print:

                The 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Student competition will open on May 1, 2015.  The Fulbright U.S. Student program is open to graduate students at all levels, undergraduates who will have completed their degree by the beginning of the grant period (for most countries, Sept. 1, 2015) and non-students who hold a bachelor’s degree.  The program is restricted to U.S. citizens.  The grants are for study and research abroad, and are available for most countries.  Grants are awarded for all disciplines, including the sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, and the performing and creative arts.  A number of countries also offer grants for those who wish to serve as English teaching assistants.

An information session for prospective applicants will be presented by an Alumni Ambassador from the Institute of International Education on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 from 3-4pm in CLA 0.128.

Deadlines and Procedures:

1.  Potential applicants must register with us, by completing the FULBRIGHT REGISTRATION SURVEY 2016-2017:

The survey will ask the applicant’s name, contact information, academic status (i.e., undergrad, grad, alumnus), country or region of interest, and area of study or research topic.

2.  The applicant should go to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program website

(http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html) for country summaries, information about preparing an application, and, starting May 1, to begin the online application process.

3.  The applicant should also review our campus website:

http://world.utexas.edu/abroad/funding/scholarships/fulbright

4.  Campus Deadline: The applicant must submit copies of all application materials electronically to our office by 2 PM on September 3. Interviews are tentatively scheduled between September 14 and September 25.  While the deadline for final submission to the national office has not yet been announced, my expectation is that it will be around mid-October 2015.

Crash Course in Investment Banking Workshop

Are you interested in working in the investment banking or consulting fields?

Come to our Crash Course in Investment Banking and Consulting workshop to make sure you’re ready to apply for these highly competitive careers.

Most investment banks and some consulting firms recruit for their full-time positions only once a year, between mid-August and early September. So, if you are graduating in December 2015 or May 2016, you will need to apply soon. With that in mind, our goal is to help you gain a glimpse into consulting and investment banking careers and to learn what you can do to prepare.

Our workshop goals include:

  • Industry – gaining a better understanding of what analysts and consultants do
  • Timing – planning the most effective time to start your search
  • Resources – finding job postings and other related resources
  • The Process – preparing for and submitting a strong application

Joynes Reading Room Hosts Author Asali Solomon Thursday, April 23

The Joynes Reading Room will host author Asali Solomon at 7 p.m. on April 23rd. This event is free and open to everybody. Solomon is the author of Get Down (a collection of short stories) and Disgruntled (a novel). In 2007, she was named one the National Book Foundations’ Five writers to watch under the age of 35. The Joynes Reading Room has a limited number of FREE BOOKS by Asali Solomon that may be claimed by honors students who plan to attend the reading.
