Autoimmune neuroinflammatory conditions, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), are caused by a direct immune system attack on the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system or CNS). Although MS and NMOSD are some of the best described autoimmune conditions of the CNS, there is a growing scientific appreciation that many other neurological conditions can be caused by neuroinflammation, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy and epilepsy.

Our lab is studying (1) why autoimmune diseases are more prevalent in females, while striking males with a more severe disease; (2) how diet and alcohol influence inflammation in the gut and brain; and (3) what are gut and CNS immune markers of nervous system autoimmune disease onset and progression. The ultimate goal of our research is to identify new sex-specific immune biomarkers of autoimmune nervous system conditions that can translate into more sensitive and specific diagnostic tests and therapeutics for people living with neurological autoimmune diseases.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, our lab is contributing to world-wide scientific efforts by studying the immunological and autoimmune response in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and by hosting a weekly seminar and blog on COVID-19 Scientific Updates.
