Transportation
Bus
For students who have to commute, be prepared for rush hour backlogs on Austin’s two major N/S corridors, MoPac and I-35. Because UT has the biggest and best University bus system in the country (plus it’s free for students with your ID!), we highly recommend using it when possible. For more information on the UT shuttle system, please visit UT’s Parking & Transportation Page.
Many city buses also run by the iSchool. Visit Capital Metro’s Trip Planner to find out which routes are most convenient for you. Bus rides are free with your UT Student ID!
Bicycle
Bikes are a good option for iSchoolers who live near UT. You can take the lane anywhere on campus because all the speed limits are only 15mph, and there are a decent number of racks located in the front of the UTA building.
Take care when locking up your bike at 1616. UTPD considers the area around our school to be a high activity area for bike theft. Take lights and any other valuable items off your bike when you go inside! Additionally, if you are using a cable lock you should seriously consider upgrading to a U-lock.
Register your bike! It takes only a moment to find your serial number and register your bike online with Parking & Transportation Services. They’ll mail you your bike permit sticker, but as an added bonus, your bike will be registered in case it’s ever stolen.
Parking
The UTA building, where the iSchool is located, is attached to the Guadalupe Garage (GUG). Commuting students can purchase semester long permits for this garage through Parking and Transportation Services.
There are many curbside “pay to park” spaces around the iSchool that students pay to use. Parking meters around the iSchool are typically enforced from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday and cost $1 per hour. Many students find street parking to be a more affordable option than buying a garage parking permit. Motorcycles and scooters can park for free at all city parking meters.
Dining
Luckily for you, there are lots of places to eat, all within a short walk of the iSchool! Additional options can be found on “The Drag,” a strip of restaurants and shops along Guadalupe Street between Dean Keeton Street and 21st Street.
You can also store food in the iSchool kitchen on the first floor of the UTA. The iSchool kitchen has a fridge, freezer, sink, dishes, cutlery, and a microwave. Students are expected to clean up after themselves!
